I'm a big Anglophile, I will be eating this up with a spoon! Can you imagine knowing you're going to be Queen someday? Her life is not going to be her own any longer. But she seems to have a good head on her shoulders, I think she's going into it with both eyes open.

There's a good article about the two of them and their relationship in this month's Vanity Fair. I just read it a few days ago. They have been through their ups and downs and always seem to come back to each other. I hope it all works out...she seems lovely, but like she's not going to take any nonsense from him either. I was another one who got up at 5 a.m. to watch Charles and Diana's wedding live. I remember going to swimming lessons and then coming home to watch more post-wedding coverage when I got home. It's funny to me now, because I'm not exactly the princessy type, but it all seemed so glamorous.

Noooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!!!!!!! I still (sadly) had hopes that one day I would meet Prince William and he would instantly realize that we were destined to be together.

Ok, maybe he's kinda weird looking now, but 10 years ago he was HOT! Plus, both he and DH are helicopter pilots...at least DH has good looking teeth.:D

I can't wait...I eat this stuff up! Kate appears to be a class act and I really like the two of them together.

For being royals, William and Harry seem humble and appear to have good heads on their shoulders. I give Diana (and Prince Charles, but mostly Diana) all the credit in the world for raising such great young men.

Not true!!! There are plenty of other unattached princes out there. Just do a search. And of course, there is still prince Harry...

I could be wrong about this, but I don't think she would ever become Queen. Kind of like how Prince Phillip is Prince, not King even though he's married to the Queen. Then again, I'm far from an expert of royal succession. DH is English, but he's pretty anti-royalist.

YAY! Agree with the other posters that before Williams receding hairline started he was quite a fine looking young man.

Yes I believe you are right. In order to become a queen you have to be born into the family. The next possible queen would have to come from either William, or if William went childless then Harry. Now if both Harry, and William go childless then I think it would go Prince Andrew's eldest daughter. Beyond that it gets all to confusing about who has what title. Kate may eventually become a princess if William becomes king, but she'll most likely be a duchess until that happens.

Jease, I would've jumped at the chance to take a class on British royalty in college!

She'll be called Queen, even though technically she will be the Queen Consort. This article explains it (kind of):

ETA: Sorry, this is the article that actually explains the process, and that she will have a coronation and everything:

Right. She wouldn't be called the Queen until William is King.

For example, Prince Charles and Camilla are also the Duke and Duchess of Cornwall, but he's still a prince. Diana was HRH Princess Diana (pre-divorce) and was also the Duchess of Cornwall. They hold multiple titles.

I was about 8 when Di and Charles married- my grandma taped together newspaper, to the length of Di's train, for my cousin and I to parade around. Needless to say, it was pretty hard when Princess Di died, because only the year before, my grandma had died and it brought back those memories.

It'll be interesting to watch!

Ok I teared up when I read this.

Prince William revealed tonight that he proposed using the engagement ring of his mother, Diana, Princess of Wales, to make sure she 'didn't miss out on the excitement'.
The 28-year-old Prince used the dazzling oval blue 18-carat sapphire and diamond ring when he popped the question while they were on holiday in Kenya last month.
Diana, who died in 1997, chose the elegant cluster ring after becoming engaged to Charles in 1981 and William handing it on to his wife-to-be will undoubtedly have been hugely emotional.
At the time it cost £28,000 and was from a selection presented to her by jewellers Garrard. Because it was not made for her specially, it was open to the public to buy.
As they posed for pictures at St James' Palace tonight, William said giving Kate the ring was his way of ensuring his late mother could be part of the occasion.
In front of the world's press, he said: 'It is very special to me. It was my way to make sure my mother did not miss out on today and the excitement that we are going to spend the rest of our lives

I just saw the show on them last week and how she was known as "Waity Katie". Since they've lasted this long I hope itheir marriage is forever. I know he was waiting for the right time to do it, not because he's X years old or the public wants him to pop the ?. Happy for both of them. Just hope they can somewhat have a private life. HA, not going to happen. I know.

Does anyone know if Charles is still in line to be King? I thought he gave up that right when he divorced Diana.

I heard rumors that when the queen dies, they (whoever "they" are!) are thinking of passing over Charles and making William king. I don't know if it had to do with the divorce.

Maybe she was the one who suggested it??? I really don't know and can't even remember where I heard that. I was hoping someone might chime in who actually knew what they were talking about. I have no idea how the rules work, but I swear I heard that somewhere.

Yeah, I thought it was the Queen who did that. Was pissed Charles was getting a divorce/having an affair so she was considering skipping Charles and moving right on to William. I thought I read that he even agreed to it. Now, all these articles seem to think Charles is gonna be King so I wondered what happened to the idea of skipping him.

I thought that was because the Queen wouldn't give the title of King, because then people look to the King, being the man, to have the power. And he doesn't, she does. The Queen's mother was known as Queen, but that's because the King had the role of monarch.

Those rumors have been circulating for ages, but it's not how it's done. Just the way the press wants it because they don't find Charles exciting. The fact is, it kind of defeats the purpose of a hereditary monarchy (that is, if you find purpose in that to begin with... questionable).

Does anyone have the right to do that? I mean, only Elizabeth would really have the right to change the laws/rules like that, right?

I don't even know if the Queen could change that. It is a constitutional monarchy, and the Queen doesn't have any legislative power - I mean she can't make laws herself. She does approve the laws that have been passed correctly by the parliament - but she does not have power of veto or power to change anything. She can't choose the Prime Minister or disagree with someone who has been voted in - she has to go along with laws that have been passed. Her role is one of advisor, and the Prime Minister consults with her, she can give advice, but she can't decide what to do.

I would think to change the laws of succession, they would need parliament to agree to doing that.

So, according to wikipedia "Upon the death of the Sovereign, his or her heir immediately and automatically succeeds (hence the phrase "The King is dead. Long live the King!")....After an individual ascends the throne, he or she reigns until death. The only voluntary abdication, that of Edward VIII, had to be authorised by a special Act of Parliament". So a special Act of Parliament would be needed to skip Charles.

In Australia we have a the Governor General, whose role is to check that the legislative process was followed, and he is the Queen's representative, but he is chosen by the parliament, and then the Queen agrees to the appointment - but she can't stop it or change it. There is no legal power in the monarchy. BUT, the Governor General can dissolve parliament under certain conditions. In Australia, it happened once in 1975 when appropriation bills to fund the government kept being blocked. There were new elections. I studied it a lot in law school, and it's still a very controversial legal issue, that most legal scholars don't think a Governor General will do it again. I believe the Queen has similar powers in the UK, can dissolve parliament under certain conditions.

DH thinks it's weird that we still have the Queen...he always tells me "we fought to kick them out." But the Queen has no real power in Australia, so it's remained.

I am still twitterpated over all of it. They seem like a decent couple and there is none of the "must marry a virgin" crap that led Charles to choose Diana. I think they have a decent shot at it all. The part that I find odd is that her family is constantly referred to as "middle class". I guess that's Brit speak for commoner. Because her family has quite a bit of money as I recall. But she seems to have a good head on her shoulders and so does he. I wish them the best of luck!

Wasn't there a vote a few years ago to break from the monarchy, but they voted to keep it?

Yes, there was a referendum. The option was to keep things as they are or allow the parliament to choose a president. Resounding "keep the status quo" vote. I do think many people wanted a republic, but there was no agreement on the form that it should be - eg. president directly elected, appointment by parliament, what terms should be etc. and when only given one option (Parliament appoints), they voted No.

And there are people that support the monarchy and wanted to keep it. Others felt if it isn't broken why change things? The Queen and UK had no legal role in Australia. Legal ties were severed in 1986, but nothing had been done for decades prior to that ( I think since the 1930's for legislation and the 1960's for court cases). Our legal system is based on UK and many legal principles are traced back to UK cases and legislation, but there is no direct governance. For many people changing a everything - coins, currency, government letter head etc, all of that was far more costly and they didn't feel anything would be gained, as the Queen and UK parliament have no political power.

And despite all the anti-Pom sentiment, there are long ties and relationships - even if it is just glee when Australia once again beats the UK at cricket and rugby!
