I was thinking of getting an international sim card so I can use my phone (I'll have to call to unlock it) and then use it when I visit family in Australia and UK...anyone done this?

I was going to try this but in the end it was easier and cheaper to get a UK phone and a pay-as-you-go plan through Orange for the UK and Europe which I use when I'm there.

I think this might be the best option for us too. Or, I'll buy a local sim card when get there and use that

I did this in Europe in 2005. I bought an unlocked GSM phone that I used here. When over there I bought a prepaid sim, and it worked like a charm.

I think I'll go this route. In Australia you receive free calls to your mobile, so I can even text DH to call me and he can use One Suite to call me and it's only $0.09 a minute from here.

That's what we did when we were in Australia for 3 weeks this spring.

Make sure you get the phone unlocked! I had planned to do it on a trip to SE Asia last year but couldn't. Fortunately it was really inexpensive to rent a phone plus card.
