And if so, how? Sisi is 3yo. I remember having my hair tied up in rags to sleep in overnight and I remember sleeping in foam curlers (ouch!), but I can't remember at what age that started. I would never use a curling iron on Sisi at this age, but she has long hair and I'd love to get it to curl, somehow, for Christmas Eve (when we see extended relatives).

Do you think 3yo is too young to tie her hair in soft strips of rags? My gut says it might be that she might fight it, but I honestly can't remember a time when my mom didn't curl my hair in rags and I have a good memory from when I was little.

Thoughts? Suggestions?

we've done rags and also the curling iron. my DD sits very still, though, and always has. I think I tried the rags first and she was probably right around 3, maybe close to 4. I know we did it for Christmas last year when she was 4, but I used a curling iron.

You could also use the foam rollers, but blow dry it rather than have her sleep in them. Use a diffuser, though. I used a curling iron on DD at that age, just didn't roll it too close to her head.

I will never need to curl DDs' hair, but I have used a straightener on it and it was no big deal. IMO, a curling iron or curling with a straightener (my favorite method) is faster and less of a pain than any other.

I'd love to use a curling iron but Sisi is wayyy too wiggly. She'd get burnt for sure.

I'm going to try the rags. We'll see how she does!

We've done both DD and DN in curlers. Both were simply precious! However, both have always wanted curly hair (Sister and I both have curly hair [mine permed, her's natural]), so they were very determined to get curly hair like mommy's at whatever cost!

DSD has also curled DD's hair with a curling iron. DD has very baby fine hair, DSD did it on the lowest setting, and it was cute, but again, DD was determined to have curly hair no matter what, because all her grown-ups have curly hair.

My mom always used the uncomfortable curlers or a curling iron. We used that with DN as well. Id love to learn how you use rags? I asked my mom and she didn't know either.

I used a curling iron on my DD after she turned 4, but her hair was long (halfway down her back) so even when I rolled it up, I was able to keep it a couple inches away from her head - and she sits still very well. It was a very last minute idea, so I wouldn't have had time for anything else. :) I would never be able to use one on my DS (not that I'll need to!) because he is so wiggly, so I totally understand. I'd give the foam curlers or rags a try ahead of time and see how it goes!

I tried curlformers - pretty fun! Actually, I have to confess that I threw them at the mother's helper (who has younger sisters) and ran off to do errands. They came out pretty cute, but we didn't let it dry completely. We also did not use any mousse or anything. Both of these things would help. We need a few packs to get through my DD's full head of hair.

After reading that other thread, I bought Curlformers and they work FABULOUSLY! I put a little product on dd's hair and then put them in the curlers. She sleeps on them but her hair's so fine that I could probably put it in curlers and blow dry it in about 15 minutes. Then I took a tiny bit more product to work in a bit while I separated curls and she came out looking FABULOUS. :) And...the curls lasted three days! That's unheard of w/my girls' stick straight hair!

What my mom did was take a clean, old towel and rip it into long stips. Then in the evening before the event, she'd get my hair a bit damp (or wash it and then let it air dry quite a bit) and then take strips of my hair and roll them in the rags. Once they were rolled up to my head, she'd tie them off so they didn't unroll. They were pretty soft and not poky so they weren't as uncomfortable as the foam curlers. And then my hair would dry overnight and in the morning they'd be very kinky-curly.

But I'm really liking the way AngelaS's daughter looks! too cute!

Sooo cute!
Where did you get the curlformers? Curlformers.com or another retailer? Which type did you get for stick straight hair?

Lisa, thanks for the rag curls lesson.

I got curlformers at Sally Beauty Supply. Get one or two of the sticks also. Ours broke, so we had to drive back and get another.

I first bought two packages of the green/blue curlers at Sallys. I quickly realized that was no where NEAR enough. So then I bought the salon pack of them from Curlformers.com I kind of choked at the price, but I don't see them wearing out any time soon. :)
