Looking for advice on durability of Ikea and Costplus furniture. Also pine vs harder woods...
We're buying a new dining table to replace one that was damaged in a house leak. We've narrowed it down to Ikea and Costplus.
Anyone have experience with pine dining tables from Ikea? We're looking at the Stornas table and are worried pine will look terrible in a short time since it's such a soft wood. Any thoughts on pine dining tables?
Our other option is Costplus, the Tuscan extension table. I'm not crazy about the rustic look on this, nor the fact that it has non-storing end leaves. Anyone have any experience with this particular table or others from Costplus?

We have a table from Costplus (World Market) and I LOVE it. It still looks great after 5 years of heavy use (3 boys- we use it for everything- meals, crafts, playing, laptops, etc). We have ours in the kitchen and never use our dining room set since the kitchen set is so nice/ large.

We have a solid wood table from costplus and it is STURDY! It is an old Talavera style that has different color stone down the center of the table. It is a very heavy table and has really held up. We had one water stain from my husband but I was able to remove it with one of those water stain remover cloths from Lowes. I would definitely buy from cost plus again. Plus if you get it on sale it's a great deal.

Just another option. We have this table and it is so solid and beautiful.

Hands down, I recommend Cost Plus furniture over Ikea. We have the Lugano dining set from Cost Plus, and it is beautiful and solid. Love it! I swear that many pieces from Cost Plus rival pricier places like Crate and Barrel and Pottery Barn in terms of quality, but for a fraction of the cost. But Cost Plus and Ikea have different looks, IMO. Cost Plus is more hearty/rustic. Ikea has a more modern, contemporary look.
We have this table:

I have Cost Plus dining room and living room furniture, and I love it. We've had it for 6 years and it's held up beautifully.
I have the Lugano table from CostPlus as well and I can't say enough good things about it. It's awesome. We've had it for 7 years, and it still looks great.

I love the look of the World Market tables; however, we're searching for counter-height options. Would anyone know of a place that has a decent selection of counter height tables in a similar style? I love the weathered, farmhouse, hearty/beefy table style...TIA!

Have you seen the latest Costco Magazine ad? Says there is this counter height wood table (in stores only). Don't know the price, but worth taking a look. Haven't been to the store myself, but it looked nice in the magazine.

It is $899.99 at our local Costco. I'm not a fan of counter height tables, but it looked nice.

Yes, thanks. I've actually seen it at our Costco. I wanted something a bit "chunkier" if that makes sense, though we are still considering it. I may look at some Amish sites, though they're not as budget-friendly as World Market and the like.
I want counter-height in our kitchen so that the table can act as an island for occasional food prep, too. I really adore the Restoration Hardware dining tables but none of them come in counter-height (and they're too large for our kitchen anyway). They're so beautiful, though.

Mine didn't. It's always nice to have a friend with a truck :D
We love our bookcases from World Market.

This doesn't answer your Ikea vs CostPlus question, but if you happen to live in or near a large metro area I highly recommend checking Craigslist for a dining table. I routinely search CL for Restoration Hardware furniture, not because I need anything specific but just in case something great comes up. The most frequently posted item I see is dining room tables. And RH has some gorgeous dining room tables. So you might be able to snag a great deal on a nice RH table if it suits your style.

We have a dining table from Ikea that we have gotten SO many compliments on. Too bad they d/c'ed it!!! But the wood is that Leksvisk or whatever, the brownish pine... They still make the chairs we have (ladderback, I want to say they are $25 each?)
It holds up well to normal stuff but my kids have attacked the surface with forks (why? I never remember feeling like I had to attack a table with a fork) so there are some gouges in the surface. And one of the chairs has marks in the back because my motherhood maternity pants had these evil pokey rivets I kept scratching that chair up with. Otherwise its in good shape LOL

Alas, our local Costplus closed some months ago. However, over the years we have bought quite a few pices of furniture (coffee and end tables, bar tables, etc.), have been and still are very satisfied with appearance, wearability (tough stuff) and such. Wish we could say the same about IKEA. Last June we downsized living quarters from a 4 BR house to a 3 BR apartment in a 2-family and decided, among other things, a new dining table was in order. Purchased a STORNAS table from IKEA - solid pine, seating for 8-10. The fact that it was pine (notorius for easy scarring) didn't bother us - we are in our 60's, alas no grandkids and relatively careful with furnishings. Item(s) were delivered and we paid for a contract assembly. No problems until the 1st week of December, when there was sound like someone firing a rifle in the house. First thought was house settling and a wall cracking. Nope. Couldn't find anything. A week later, I was vaccuming the floor and noticed a 1/4" crack in one of the legs. Two plus two = Aha!, now we know what that noise was. Contacted IKEA, explained situation. Their response was for us to disassemble (of have done), packed and brought to the store for their evaluation of the "potential" defect. Our estimated cost approx. $150 for a $400 table. My reponse was, essentially, that there is nothing "potential" about the defect, and I saw no reason to add additional $$$ to the original cost, when all I needed was a replacement leg and was willing to pay for same and drive up (65 miles RT) to get it. I have not had a response since their original (12/22/10). So much for Customer Service. Oh yes, one of the other legs cracked just last Thursday. We're talking about heading across town to Costplus!
