Today and tomorrow flood water is supposed to hit Brisbane in Australia and they're predicting over 6000 homes will be inundated. I have friends and family in that area. My cousin has already evacuated her house, and another friend is preparing to do the same.

My parents live a few hours north, and their area is hit too. Their house is fine as on a hill, and they're prepared with a generator and my mother had 3 fridges and freezers - they might get cut off from town for a few days.

They've had 20" of rain in the last 10 days. That's on top of 90" last year - the rivers can't hold anymore. The rain needs to stop...

It really is frightening what's going on over there. Sorry for your friends/family. DH has family in Australia, and I have friends there, but they're all in or around Sydney or Melbourne.

I would be really afraid of snakes and crocodiles swimming into my house.

Thanks. There's a river that winds his way through the city and in 1974 it broke it's banks and flooded the first level of the offices and shops in the main business district. There's an outdoors mall right there and it's been evacuated as the first level of shops may go under.

They're predicting higher levels this time. There's a couple of dams upriver but they have to do controlled releases as at full capacity as well.

And mum said there is a cyclone developing in the coral sea, so no relief in sight.

Brisbane won't get any crocodiles as too far south, but yep, there could be some snakes washed in. I would think you would have to be pretty unlucky to get your house flooded and bitten by a snake though. It seems most people have spend last day or two moving things to higher ground, but still that much water through your house....I shudder at the thought of it.

It's terrible isn't it. I have a cousin in Brisbane who's apartment is in the flood zone, he's debating whether to evac (watching facebook closely) and my sister just went to visit him and is stuck at a beach up the coast trying to get back to Brisbane but can't yet because of flooding. Mind you, better to be there than in the floods. Those poor people.

The main highway into Brisbane is cut in several places, and some drivers are stuck in their cars with no way forward or back. Better for your sister to stay at the beach area - as long as that is safe.

My cousin packed up her rental apartment and took all valuables in her car to friend's house to stay. Other friends have moved everything upstairs. It's a wait and see how high the river gets...It's really devastating to the area.

They're now saying 20,000 homes could be flooded in the area and people are evacuating. The population is about 2 million.

I hope one friend decided to move her things to another friend's house, she wasn't sure last time I heard..off to check facebook.

My Australian FB friends have been posting about this too. I had not even heard until I saw the posts yesterday. Hoping it turns out better than expected.

I am watching the news reports closely. I lived in Brisbane back in 1988-89 and remember it fondly. Sending PT to everyone there.
