Since I have never seen snow or live in an area that gets snow I would love for you all to post your snow pictures/videos. Last year we did this there were some beautiful pictures.

Hopefully this year or next year we are going to rent a cabin and finally see snow.

I'd love to share with you but for WNY this storm was all bark and no bite. All schools are closed and yet we have maybe 4in of snow. All the weathermen on TV this morning were apologizing for getting the forecast wrong.

Here are some pics from Chicago.

#1 - Sled hill we made in back yard. That fence is a 6ft fence.
#2 - the front part of our cars complete impacted in snow!
#3 - fence blown over from the wind
#4 - back door which is actually in a cover patio, so all of that was drifting snow.
#5 - 6ft+ snow drifts in the back yard

What does it mean when you guys say "Please don't quote pictures"?

It means when you quote that post delete the picture. It is so extra server space is not wasted and so people can remove personal pics for privacy. It is the polite thing to do! :)

Privacy issues. I have a picture of DD in my post, and I'm going to delete it when this thread is old... but if it is quoted in someone else's post, I don't think I can delete that. It might be a little overly cautious, but you never know where pictures can end up.

I had these in the other thread. Alot of snowmageddeon threads.

This is my front door. I had to put all my weight into it just to open it enough to stick my arm out so I could take the next picture.

This is across the street. It's always a shade milder on that side of the street than our side, so all the homes on my side of the street generally get it worse. You can see how high up the garage the snow is, and the mailbox is sticking out the top of the snow, as well. If I open my garage I'll never get it closed again. The driveway has 4-foot drifts. Not only am I stuck, I'm stuck with no DH. I could go out there and try to use the snowblower, but it will be pointless. Nothing short of a commercial plow will be able to clear the snow from my driveway.

Liamsmom,

dh did all of the work on the rink, but I'll explain the process as best as I can. If you have more questions, I'll consult him. He loves to discuss the rink with anyone who will listen.

This is our second year and I can tell you it's definitely a learning process. He is already talking about what he will do differently for next year.

The boards and glass were bought off of craigslist. They're old - someone acquired them 15 years ago from a local arena and set them up in their yard -and sold them when their boys went off to college. It turns out that they were from an arena that dh used to play hockey at as a child and he couldn't resist the opportunity. You don't need them, a simple frame is all that is necessary.

Location is important

Your spot needs to be as level as possible. We thought our yard was very level, but when you are collecting water it becomes very obvious where the low spots are. On one end of the rink we probably had 8 inches of water before there was enough depth on the other end.

Our rink is just outside the door to our basement which is really convenient. The kids can get dressed inside and not have to walk far to the rink and my dh has the garden hose hooked up to our water indoors so that he can flood the rink. It's also great for keeping the living portion of my house clean. We host alot of iceskating parties and 10-20 people in and out of the snow and ice can get messy.

Supplies needed
lumber to create a frame. (he used scrap that a friend in construction gave us, but I think 2x10s would be adequate.)

A tarp
We bought an extra large tarp from a marine supply company online large enough for the rink. (we were hoping to get a few years out of the tarp so we opted for a more expensive, heavy duty tarp. Unfortunately, it has ripped in several places from skate blades, so we'll probably try a less expensive one next year and see how that goes.

Steps,
Make the frame, roll out the tarp and bring it up and around the frame, then secure it in place. We used 1x2 pieces of strapping and screwed the strapping to the frame.

Next year my dh is considering protecting the interior walls of the frame. This year, the tarp is exposed on the interior walls and that is where it's become ripped up from skate blades.

So, for next year, I think after the tarp is in place he is reframe the interior so that the tarp is sandwiched between the two frames.

Fill with water. We had some great rainstorms in early December that helped to fill the rink, but still we ended up having to drag out the house and fill.

It is great fun, but I will be honest, it is definitely a labor of love.

Our friends have an skating rink and the protect the interior edge of the tarp w/styrofoam pool noodley things. They look like big yellow pool noodles that are sliced on one side and stuck on the top edge of the 2X12. :)

We had a blast with our neighbors shoveling yesterday, it wasn't that cold and the kids love love love the snow! My back and triceps were killing me this morning though!

We live on a cul-de-sac and everyone helps out everyone, which is wonderful especially as it would have taken me days to do this on my own...

The big mountain at the end of the street is perfect for the kids, they have been playing on it constantly!
