Using the infant insert for a toddler?

I have a question about the infant insert in DD's RA55. She's obviously not an infant (19 mos) but she's at iny little thing, just over 16 lbs and almost 30 inches. She fits great in the RA55 with the infant insert, which takes up some of the space on either side of her. She fits fine without the insert, but there is definitely more of a gap between each hip and the side of the seat. To be honest, the insert is a bit of a pain and I would rather not use it if there are no safety reasons why it should be used. DD seems comfortable without it. Is the extra space on each side of her okay?

It's totally optional, take it or leave it depending on your convenience. I think they just had to compete with all the other companies that put extra paddy things in there, it doesn't increase safety or anything :)
