So the house next door is a rental and we have had several neighbors in the 7 years we have lived in our house, mostly good. Last month a single mother and her two sons moved in, one is going into 9th grade at the HS and one going into 5th at DS's grade school. We've talked with them a few times and everyone is friendly. A few times both DH and I have noticed the smell of pot coming from the backyard. Its kind of irritating because it makes me have to bring the kids in or take them to the park instead of just being able to enjoy our own backyard. I don't know who is smoking it, the mom, the son, a friend of the son, I don't know and with our tall fence I can't look without it being very obvious. As far as I know, no one over there is suffering from cancer or glaucoma. So should I say something to the mother about this or just let it go? Thanks for the advice.

I might say something like "I noticed some smoke coming around our yard and I am not totally sure where it is coming from have you noticed?"
see what she says

I guess it just wouldn't bother me. Do you think it's one of the kids when the parents aren't around? Then I might say something but I don't know what. Probably not even then though as I think it isn't my place. I dislike my neighbor smoking cigarettes on his deck; it comes right into my family room. But, it's not an all the time thing so I just deal with it.

Treat it the exact same way you'd treat cigarette smoke. Generally I would say nothing, but if it is frequent and so heavy that it makes you flee from your yard then look into setting up fans and maybe consider chatting with the mom about the situation.
If it's just a trace amount and you leave when you smell it just due to discomfort -- I would definitely not say anything.
