Let me preface this by saying I have a sweet, thoughtful DH who treats me very well, and I know how lucky I am. But today's my birthday and I have to admit I find my present somewhat...mystifying.

I asked for two things for my birthday -- new perfume or a gift card to a local baby boutique that I'd normally never shop at, so I can buy something frivolous for this baby (due in 12 days!). Got out of the shower this morning to find my two daughters proudly waving envelopes they'd decorated. I opened the first, and it's a gift card, all right -- for ham. Huh. Granted, it's for very nice ham, but ham.

Oh, well. I kind of get it. Back in my first trimester, I was craving ham and begged to get one of those Honey Baked Hams for New Years (and it was quite delicious). So DH is probably being really thoughtful here.

Then I open the next gift card. Again, it's for ham. Huh. Really? TWO hams? What, was there a special? At this point, I don't really know what to think (except that we're probably going to eat a lot of ham in the next few months).

DH had already left for work by the time I opened these, so I couldn't get a sense of what he had in mind when he bought these. I'm sure, knowing him, there's some very reasonable and sweet explanation, but ham? Really? :ROTFLMAO:

I find my life is much better, and my marriage, if I just accept the gifts given to me with the intent they were given. I wouldn't be surprised if there was another gift, but just go with it for now.

HAM? I am in the WTF camp - at least until he explains. Maybe 1 Ham I would get, but 2? Maybe he was thinking it would help you on maternity leave with cooking? Maybe something else is coming later today?!?! Keep us posted!

Oh boy. I hope you enjoy the hams.

I am with dogmom and really, really try to go w/ assigning a positive intent. It can be hard though.

If he doesn't pull through with the baby boutique GC, can you swing going there anyway and treating yourself to something special for the baby, even if it is something small?

First off..Happy Birthday! Second, thank you for making me giggle this morning. I'm in a resturant dining alone and LOL so people probably think I'm crazy. Anyway, I agree that ham is a little mystifying but I'm sure all in good thought. My DH and I agreed that bdays and anniversaries gifts are spa related or on my own. I know its nice being surprised but to avoid a ham situation, I don't mind being NOT surprised:) have a great day!

Here's my guess. Your husband was being sweet and thoughtful with Ham #1, just like you think. Ham #2 is a result of one of the girls being really upset that she doesn't get to give you ham like her sister does because you really like ham and if I can't give her a ham mommy will be really sad and we don't need any baby things because we have a lot and please please let me give mommy a ham too! Sniffle. Then dad buys another ham. At least that's how it would go at my house. Happy Birthday!

ETA: Is it possible the DH let the kids pick their own b-day gifts to you and they both chose ham? Sometimes DH will take the kids out to get gifts for me that they choose, and though he tries to guide them, they can be a little random. Maybe DH's official gift to you will be later?

That's exactly what I was thinking. At my house, there is no way for one girl to give a gift without the other girl getting to give one as well and usually they have to give the same thing. The little one absolutely will NOT be satisfied unless she can give the same thing her big sister is giving. Needless to say, I get two of a lot of things - two travel coffee mugs, two robes, two necklaces, etc. DH bought me a pair of Uggs for christmas and each girl gave me one shoe. I'm sure there is a backstory to this one.

Happy Birthday and keep us posted.

I have to disagree here. In this house, mama deserves a nice birthday gift. And if mama ain't happy, ain't nobody happy. ;)

I'd be having a conversation tonight with my dh, making it clear that while I love ham (assuming you do!), HAM is not an acceptable birthday gift and that I will let him have another shot at it. :D

LOL, DH let the boys pick my birthday gifts this year. I got $20 in Baskin Robbins gift certificates from DS1 (who, as it happens, loves to go to BR) and a superhero action figure from DS2 (who of course immediately wanted to "borrow" it!) Maybe I am in a crummy mood, but I do not think there is anything cute or sweet about getting a grocery product (let alone 2) for my birthday. Since when is a grocery staple a gift??? Did I miss something??? Ladies, we need to rise up or 5 pound bags of flour are not too far behind...

Aaand we have a winner! Just talked to DH (he isn't home yet, so no news on other possibly forthcoming presents). He was a Costco with his boss and saw the gift cards for a discount, and bought them thinking it was a good deal and would be nice after the baby comes. Then he decided it'd be funny to have each of the girls give me one for my birthday. He says he thought about sticking around to see my reaction, but thought it would be funnier to leave me a little mystified.

And this is why I love my husband. He's just the right mix of thoughtful and weird.
