Twice in the past 2 days I've heard "old" (OK, one was from the 90s) songs on the radio and just like that, it's as if I'm transported back to the past. Today I heard one song (I'm too embarassed to admit what song!) and bam, I was in my HS BF's car on the day she got her license back in 1994, with the wind in our faces, the radio blaring, and feeling a crazy amount of freedom we'd never felt before. The memory was so vivid, DH laughs at me for being able to describe the whole "scene". Apparently he thinks I'm a freak of nature ;), but I can't be the only one--can I?

No you are not the only one! It happens to me all the time ...especially because my 2 favorite XM stations are the 80's and 90's stations. They are like time warps for me :)

yup. and i won't say what songs, but when I hear 'oldies' from the 80s I try not to do the math, LOL. Like when I hear "In your eyes" by Peter Gabriel, i still remember going to see Say Anything, in 1989 ;)

Yes, I feel the exact same way. It is almost spooky how music transports me into the past. I actually had a really bad experience while listening to a particular CD and that group is permanently ruined for me. But most of my music-related memories are awesome and I love remembering good times with those old CDs!

Not quite so vividly, but I'll Stop the World and Melt with You always reminds me of my college boyfriend and the mix tape he gave me. (Yes, I AM that old.). And there is a song that reminds me of exactly how much I missed dh the year he was stationed overseas and I was stateside. I always feel like crying when I hear it. And Bees wing often makes me picture ds when he was very little because he loved that song and would run around our little duplex asking for it.

Thanks for sharing! I'm glad I'm not the only one. I am currently searching on Spotify to play all of my old favorites that we don't already have on itunes! A rockin' Saturday night over here...

Catherine, so funny you should mention the mix tape--my friends in high school and I used to make them and pass them around, and I hung onto a few of them for years. About 2 years ago the last one broke and I was so upset! I actually hung onto my old Walkman forever to listen to them, LOL.

I know what you mean--I still go out of my way to avoid hearing the song I was listening to when I was driving east toward NYC on 9/11/01 and suddenly realized that the smoke in the sky right up ahead wasn't from a run of the mill fire . It was a 10,000 Maniacs song that I always liked, but it literally gives me goosebumps and makes my stomach churn every time I hear it now.

Tonight on the way to Target (because my Saturday nights ROCK now that my local Target stays open until 11 ;)) I heard Mysterious Ways (U2) and was instantaneously transported back to the summer after my senior year of HS. I wish I could back to the insane-in-love feeling I had that summer for just one night!

Yes, some songs remind me of ex-boyfriends. Some songs remind me of friends. And some songs remind me of college or living at the shore while still in college.

I like it - it brings back happy memories that I don't typically think of...even if its a break-up song, I still smile because even though it may have been devestating for me at the time, its nice to think back and realize how lucky I was to have experienced love in the first place.

So, dh went to Texas Tech for two years before he enlisted in the Marine Corps. as he was driving out of twown for the last time, guess what song was playing on the radio?

Yes, it was in fact, Lubbock in My Rearview Mirror. And he has told me that that moment is crystal clear in his memory.

Totally! I find more songs are associated with my high school memories. Songs that were themes to proms, summer mix tapes, on the radio during certain drives (like Senior Cut Day when we headed to the beach -Brown Eyed Girl by Van Morrison), etc.

You're definitely not the only one. There are even songs about how songs bring back memories - most notably Kenny Chesney's I Go Back and the other that comes immediately to mind is Trisha's The Song Remembers When. Both are on youtube.

I love being transported back to the past from hearing a song. Most were great party songs or ex boyfriend songs and all bring a smile to my face.

Oh yeah. I have two that bring back very specific memories. West End Girls by the Pet Shop Boys transports me back to this meaningless moment in my bedroom where I was standing by my bed, looking out my window and eating some Sweet Tarts. Totally odd. The other is Every Little Thing She Does is Magic by The Police. It is a way too sweet and personal event to share with anyone. I get a silly grin on my face whenever I hear it.

Funny thR this topic should come up now. I recently heard 2 songs that were like time machines. They seriuously took me back to a time I'd completely forgotten. The first was "Jesse's Girl" by Rick Springfield. When I heard those first few notes and the words "Jesse is a friend..". I felt all giddy like I did when I was 8yo and had a huge crush for him. I used to listen to the radio all day hoping to hear that song. And when I heard it again the feeling was so magical that I didn't want it to end. :)

the second song was one that my dad used to sing to me when I was about 3 or 4 years old. It was the song, "Did you happen to see the most beautiful girl in the World?" by Charlie Rich. It made me feel so special and cherished that it still brings tears to my eyes when I think of that song.
