View Full Version : How do you transition bedtime for school--slowly or cold turkey?

We start school a week from tomorrow and I'm starting to think about how we really need to shift back our sleep schedule for school. During the school year, the kids are typically in bed by 7:30-8:00pm and have to wake up around 6:45-7:00 to make it to school on time. They do share a room, so they chat quite a bit and don't actually fall asleep until later.

During the summer, they stay up until 9pm and sometimes even later :bag. They typically don't wake up until 8:30-9:00am.

Part of me thinks I just want them to enjoy the long evenings of summer for the rest of the week and worry about getting them to sleep earlier Monday and Tuesday next week. Is this too short of a transition? Should we be slowly pushing back bedtime starting now? I don't want them to be half asleep the first few days of school. How have you guys dealt with this? Oh, also, my kids are 5 and 6, going into kinder and 2nd, if that makes a difference... Thanks!

We pretty much go cold turkey, but I generally try to get my DCs in bed by 8 pm regardless of whether they're on vacation or not. My older DD is always up early so there's hardly a change to her. It's my 6 year old not-a-morning-person who is always the challenge, even after being in school for a while!
