Wow. That is surprising. I wouldn't have guessed that it is cheaper to run a fridge than a dvr!

Ok that would explain my electric bill! Seriously though, the cable box gets left on after it records a show as I think it needs to be on (or turns on when it records) and doesn't shut off itself...annoying!

Well this is a good idea but we record some shows late at night and this would require us to come downstairs in the middle of the night to turn off the box.

And according to the article, even turning "off" the box just dims the clock, and doesn't really reduce electricity use by the stupid thing. I've been nagging DH a lot because he often leaves the set top box on, and I guess it doesn't really matter if he were to turn it off. Grr..

I have to admit that I just read the article now, ok so no point in turning off the box, unplugging it is really not going to happen since then you can't DVR shows.
We have 2 DVRs and 1 other non-DVR box...not good for the electric bill! I'll have to remember to at least unplug the two boxes that aren't DVRing when we go on vacation.

Oops, we have never had DVR or Tivo so I don't even think about that. We have remote controlled power strip so all electronics are disconnected from power overnight and when they aren't in use for awhile.
I never thought of DVR, sorry...
