I snagged my little toe in DD's classroom Friday morning. I heard a cracking sound and it hurt but not like a stubbed toe hurt.

I can move the toe but not much. It is so swollen, it has turned sideways a little. I have a dark purple bruise inbetween my little toe and the next toe, a bruise on the outside of the little toe and a smudgey shadow type bruise coming from both toes up the top of my foot more than an inch long and an inch wide.

I can walk on it but not much.

And now as I am sitting here in bed, I am just getting random pains from that area, sometimes they shoot up my foot in to my leg.

Just bruised, right? I have tried to stay off it and keep it elevated but I have too much to do!

Any ideas? Anything I can do help the swelling come down? Probably too late for a cold pack, huh?

EA: the shadow bruise is also streaking up my 4th toe, too.

There is a good chance you broke your toe. The best treatment for a broken toe is fixing it to the neighboring toe with tape. That degree of bruising can indicate an underlying fracture or bleeding. You can get an x-ray if you want to confirm the broken toe, or try taping it to your 4th toe.

I broke my toe falling down some stairs at a friend's ski cabin a few years back. My dr didn't do anything, no tape or anything. She told me the best treatment is just to wear comfortable shoes and deal with it. I ran a marathon about 2m later.

Broken.

I did this ten years ago and treatment is what the PP described. I did attempt to tape my baby toe next to the other one without much success. Just a lot of rest and ice!

Baaah. Okay, rest, ice and tape. Got it.

Thanks for your feedback everyone! That's saves me a half day off having it looked at on Tuesday!

Thanks :) DH has been very nice about it and if it had to happen, thank goodness a 3 day weekend!

Yeah, there's really nothing to be done for a broken toe, which I had recently, myself, tho yours is alot worse. Just tape it to the neighbor and wear comfy shoes. If you have orthotics, wear them. If it feels better to limp, do it. It'll get better.

I hope it gets better. You just need to give it some rest and time. I just triaged my friend's toe, which she thought she broke, but I thought it was a bug bite and it was, lol. One of my other friends broke one her toes ramming it into a PNP and it took about 2 mo before she was able to run again.

:yeahthat: to all the others who are thinking broken toe and start the buddy taping to the 4th toe.

I broke my 4th toe 2 months ago. It's no fun, but now it's all better. Except it's tipped towards the pinky a little more...

An NSAID (like Aleve or Motrin) can also help with pain & swelling. Prescription strength of Alece is about 2 tabs every 12h & Motrin 3-4 tabs every 8h. Take with food to prevent stomach irritation. Hope you feel better soon.

It's never too late for ice, esp when there is still swelling involved. Stay off of it as much as possible and keep it elevated. Ice will probably make it feel a bit better as well. Broken toes hurt! I broke a toe jamming it under the metal supports of DD's bouncer seat, but not as badly as yours. It's kind of bent up a little funny now.
