So today DD brought home a form about a Fall clinic for Lacrosse and said she would like to try it out and maybe go out for the team in the Spring. 50% of me is "yeah...go for it" the other 50% is "no nope not happening sorry"!
This year I have come to understand that rowing and Lacrosse are the "in" sports in our town for a variety of reason and there is a lot of competition at all levels of the sports here. But I know nothing of Lacrosse and am wondering if anyone played before or has a DD that plays/played could give me some information.
How coordinated does the child have to be?
Endurance level?
Is it as violent as it looks?
High risk of injuries?
This clinic is once a week but in the Spring the girls have 2 practices and one game a week....seems like a big time commiment or is this normal?.
Also the groups are by grade levels and she would be in the 5-8th Graders...at 9 yrs old she would most likely be one of the youngest...would this concern you?
I told DD I would research it tonight and that we talked to DH tomorrow if he has time to get his thoughts. DH prefers the kids not be involved in any team sports/activities on the weekend if possible becasue that is the only time he gets to spend with them.
I have sent an email to the group running the clinic and am waiting to hear back but would love to get some advice/direction
Thank you!

Field or box? I'd be hesitant to have my girl play box. I've never actually seen a girls team, but apparently they have them in my area. Who knew? I always thought it was a boys sport.
Yes, lots of endurance, similar to soccer or field hockey, particularly for field. Box is similar to ice hockey (and is often played by ice hockey players in the off season).
I'd be wary about a much younger child playing with older children. That would definitely concern me, esp. if her skill level is novice.

I haven't played lacrosse for nearly 30 years, and can't answer your questions with BTDT info. I will say that the women's game is (was?)completely different than the mens', so I wouldn't assess anything based on the example of men's lacrosse.
IME, it was less violent than field hockey. And a whole bunch of fun.

I've played both field hockey and lacrosse and I would agree with both. It is a completely different animal than boy's lacrosse and a little less scrappy than field hockey. I'd be thrilled if my daughters wanted to play either sport.

In girl's lacrosse you can't poke check like boys or any of the contact. It isn't as fun to watch as boys but it is fun to play and LOTS of running. DD who is 5 wants to play and I think it's great.
I played field hockey and I think this is more fun.

I adored playing lacrosse. You do need to be pretty coordinated and familiar with the stick, but that's just a practice thing.
Most of the players I knew kept the stick in their hands at all times - and I am totally serious, they slept with it, brushed their teeth with it, ate with it, and (of course) played with it. The reason is that holding a stick is an unnatural thing and you have to get used to doing a lot of things with it in your hand during the game. You have to be able to run with it, first and foremost, and that is less easy than it sounds. :)
If lacrosse is big in your area and she's interested, I'd get her a stick or three and start practicing with her.

I believe it is field.
I looked at some videos that I could find and it looks like a real fun sport! A lot of the game appeals to me that the girls are playing "together", running, interacting etc.
I am ready to let her register for the Fall Clinic but I am concern that if she "clicks" with it and wants to continue that we will have a problem because I am all for a sport when it is "fun" but I think the group here takes it very (very) seriously and I am not sure if DH or I could give it the same attention/commiment as would be expected from us parents...especially with our already full schedule!
I am still waiting to here back from the group maybe they can shed some light on it but want to thank those who posted with their insights.

My older DDs did a clinic last Spring and DD2 loved it. Did not seem violent at all. They wore mouth guards, but I did not see anyone get hurt. However, this was a clinic for girls from K to 3rd grade, so that might made a difference. DD would love to keep playing, but we recently moved away from the East Coast and I cannot find any clinics/leagues for her age group here.

Around here, there's no body checking in girls' lacrosse. I say let her try it. The girls your daughter's age won't have any experience with the sport either, so she'll be starting out on the same foot. I wouldn't think they'd have the older girls playing against the younger girls. My son is 9, and he'd be in the 3rd/4th grade group this year, so an age range of 8-10. It does take a lot of coordination and I'd say that being able to throw and catch is the biggie. You can practice against your garage door doing that. The running with the stick--and cradling at the same time--just takes practice/time. Even the kids in DS's league didn't all have that down after playing 2 years. It has to become automatic eventually. If you aren't cradling, someone will knock the ball out of your stick.
