Any recommendations for a cute birthday outfit that is reasonable in cost? I like the look of Gymboree's shirt/tutu/leggings but the cost is high even during baby sale. I am not very happy with Gymboree as I have a really cute sweater dress/cardi that fell apart after one wearing. Too expensive to fall apart that soon.

Maybe just a cute t-shirt to pair with jeans?
I bought a first birthday bib for DD#1, and loved it so much, we re-used it for DD#2. (It was a pale pink with cute appliques, and coordinated nicely with clothes
they already had.)
ETA: DD#1 was a champion drooler, so this was truly the best option for her.

I didn't buy a specific "birthday" outfit for DD, much to my step-mom's chagrin (she & my dad went out & bought DD a pastel pink "fun to be 1" tee that DD only wears as a nightshirt because I hate pink) ... I dressed DD in regular clothes. She wore a knit dress from Gymbo's 2010 fall line (green with a cream collar & embroidered owls on the yoke) in her 1-year photos and a brown corduroy jumper with embroidered owls on it for her party.
Everybody knows she's the birthday girl, so I never saw the point of the age-announcement outfits. (Plus, the ones for girls are all pink and have I mentioned in this post how I positively DESPISE pink?)
But, back on topic, I saw some onesies & soft crowns in Target the other day that were marked down quite a bit, so you might have a little luck there!

This is exactly what we did too.

Onesie and jeans are just fine IMHO. DD1 wore a simple onesie with a cupcake and polka dots on it, and a pair of jeans. For her actual birthday party she wore another onesie witih daisies and a matching denim jumper. With DD2 DH dressed her on her actual birthday so she didn't wear the same cupcake oneside and jeans, but another tee shirt and leggings (I think! Gosh that's bad I can't remember), and then for her party she wore a sundress I had bought 2 yrs. prior when I was pregnant with the baby we lost.
