A good friend of mine is due with her 1st baby next week. She already has all the equipment and basics taken care of. I've been out of the baby world for so long, I can't even think of what a great gift would be. They don't know the gender of the baby.

Any ideas? Or even links to past threads? I've having trouble with search.

If she already has most of her things, what about an Amazon gift card so she can buy diapers, wipes, etc?

I'd go for some "luxuries." I give Robeez all the time, you could do a pair of those, plus other things. Aden and Anais swaddling blankets are awfully nice. Dd hated to be swaddled, but we got a ton of use out of ours anyway. Some Board books would be great. Oh, what about some Hannas? If she is having a winter baby, a pilots hat is so nice to have. Or you could do a basket of bath related things: baby wash clothes from an Etsy seller, California baby unscented shampoo and body wash, California Baby unscented lotion, diaper cream, and some goodies for mama too.

One of my favorite impractical gifts from my college roommate with DS was a silver moon rattle from Tiffany's. I think it was around $100. I loved it enough that my XH got me a matching necklace that next Christmas.

I think a Mom necklace would be nice, and maybe not something the new dad would think of to get.

Also, what mom wouldn't love a picture of their newborn? After the baby is born, your friend probably won't have the time or energy to get photos framed or converted into a canvas print. So, why don't you frame some photos of the newborn or convert them to canvas prints or better yet, a photo of the new family (you may need to ask the new dad for help on getting the newborn pic).

Just gave our first nanny who finally had a baby (preemie, but doing great) after 6 long years of trying (and had a huge shower and a fully stocked PBK nursery):
-a Skip Hop Versa diaper bag (cream/ brown/ orange) for Mom on the go!
-aden & anais blankets
plus what I give all new nursing moms
-Triple Paste diaper cream
-Lansinoh disposable nursing pads
-Lansinoh milk freezer bags

It was a bit more than $100 but after all this time (and losses and prayers and tears), even DH wanted me to get her something celebratory and fun.

You might see if there is a nice baby boutique in your area and give a gift card for it. There is one in our area that offers all the nicer carriers, blankets and nursing supplies -- plus, tons of nursing help and support. It's the best place to go to try on the different carriers and get access to community resources for new moms....But if not, the best luxuries I LOVE:
* agree with Aden and Anais blankets and Robeez
* Ergo carrier
* Petunia Pickle Bottom bag

I would wait until baby is born so you can find out the name, then go to Etsy and search "personalized baby name print". You will find loads of adorable prints that they will design with any name you want. Then have it matted and framed.

I have done this 3 times already, and the parents LOVE it! It's nice to get something personalized, especially if this mom already has everything.

One of the moms showed me a pic of the print hanging in her DS's room, it was so cute.

I just came from a shower for a dear friend who is over 40 and has everything she needs. I gave her a $100 gift certificate to Let's Dish, one of those make your meals places so she can stock her freezer. She was very happy.
