I would like to switch my dog from "Wellness" to something more affordable. He was eating that when we got him and I just stuck with it, but it is expensive and can be hard to find. I don't want to feed him crap, but there must be something that is a little cheaper and still good. Any recommendations?

(I think Wellness is about $32 for 12 lbs, so about $2.66 per lb)

Kirkland dog food (from Costco) is supposed to be a good quality for the price.

:yeahthat:

We recently switched from Nutro Max over to Kirkland. We had thought the dog food we were giving was pretty good, but after reading into more of the reviews, the Kirkland food rates really well. We get the lamb one (there is chicken too I think) and it's around $27 for a 40 lb bag if my memory is correct.

I have heard very good things about the Kirkland dog food.

We currently feed our dog a mix of Science Diet lamb and rice adult and Science Diet Healthy Mobility.

I have fed my dog Wellness, along with other premium brands...but I switched to her to the Kirkland brand about a year ago.

We give our black lab Natural Balance Reduced Calorie dog food. It's about $45 to $50 for a 30lb bag, which lasts us just about a month, maybe 6 weeks.

Iams has worked well and our vet says is fine.

We use Science Diet for our cats and dog. Vet approves and it's at any Petsmart/Petco type store.

I could never afford Wellness, or Blue, or some of the ultra premium brands. I've always used Nutro, and had good luck with it. I get the Natural choice dog food, they have different "levels" of food. My dogs have done well and I was able to find a Chicken only one when my hound was having an reaction to lamb and beef for a while. I buy it at a local hardware store that sells it and they have a rewards card, so I'm always getting $5 off coupons from there, which I only use to buy the dog food. It runs closer to $1 a pound for me.

We use Blue...not sure if it's any cheaper than Wellness, but we like it.

The rescue I volunteer with uses Kirkland now. Just don't get the bottom end one. Get one of the two higher ones as they do not have corn.

Canidae lamb and brown rice. Single easily digested protein. No corn or byproducts. Wag.com carries it for a very fair price. Based on ingredients kirklands lamb and brown rice is also good but for some reason our dogs didn't do as well on it...larger poops and sometimes runny poop even after several weeks for an adjustment period.

We use 4Health from Tractor Supply Store. It gets pretty good ratings and is about $30 for a 35-40lb bag. I have heard good things about the Kirkland but unfortunately we don't have a costco.

We use Kirkland. It's made by Diamond, so it's a premium dog food at a not-premium price. Even with the pretty drastic price increases over the past couple of years (used to be $17 for a 40 lb bag, now it's $22), it's still cheap!

We use Innova. I think its just a hair cheaper than the one you use....i think i paid $26 for a 12 or 16 pound bag.

At the Costco warehouse near us, they just started carrying a new grain free food. It's called Nature's Domain but I've read it's a label only used for Costco and that it's very similar to the fish formulation of Taste of the Wild. It's also made by the same company that manufactures TOTW.

I know you've most likely heard this before, but it's true...They need MUCH more of the less-expensive dog foods (so many fillers). The super premium dog food sends my head spinning, but they eat so very little of it. My dogs eat 1/4 cup per DAY, and a 30# bag lasts me darn near six months. For TWO (small) dogs. If I fed them a cheap brand at 1/4 the price, they would eat 4x that, so six of one, half a dozen of another.

Based on the rec of a huge BBB animal expert, who believes that food quality is directly tied with the health of dogs (especially as they age), we feed Taste of the Wild. It is mega expensive, but I watch for sales and stock up (6 months to one year at a time).

I personally think that most supermarket brands are crap, after having researched the ingredients and nutrition info. Iams and Eukenuba used to be good, but they got bought out and reformulated and are now crap too.
I have read good things about the Costco brand, so if money was super tight, I'd try that.

:yeahthat: We have a Great Dane, and we feed him Blue. DH was horrified by how expensive it is, but he really doesn't eat that much, especially considering his size (190 pounds).

Your dog weighs more than ANYONE in my family. OMG.

My dogs are 9 and 14 pounds. I cannot imagine feeding a 190# dog. :rotflmao:

People ask all the time why we got such a big dog. I'm 6' and DH is 6'6". We'd look funny walking a chiuaua. :ROTFLMAO:

I am 5'9 and DH is 6'...we must look funny. But we don't walk them, we just let them out in our fenced in acre and let them chase the birds and skunks! :bighand:
