So as we learned quite recently, our 11.5 month DS loves cars, especially the ones that he can push around the floor (not small cars, but slightly bigger ones that make sounds). He played with them in Israel all the time at his cousin's house who is the same age...oddly I haven't bought him any cars here yet. Any recommendations for specific brands/models?

My son (who is 16 months) has both the "B. Wheeee-ls! Soft Cars" from Target and a bunch of Fisher Price Wheelies which both still get played with a lot (I think he got both for his 1st birthday). The "B. Wheee-Is" cars came in 4 pack, are bigger, and each make a different sound (no batteries- the sounds are bells and shakers). You pull them back a little, then they go on their own (they work best on hard, non-carpet floors). The wheelies have been great too- he has the ramp for them now and loves it. They don't make any noise but he loves them and they are easy to throw in my purse.

How ironic! Actually, I was planning on getting these cars already because DS had a chance to play with them at the Admiral's Club Lounge at LAX during our travels. They had a pretty impressive collection of B. toys including Zany Zoo, these cars, etc. In addition to these cars, I was hoping for something a bit bigger and more interactive for him, which I think will be more suitable for his current age :)

They aren't "cars" but have you checked out any of the Fisher Price Little People vehicles? They are bigger and a lot of them make sounds, have lights or sing songs. You can also put the people/animals/etc. in and out which is fun. They were greatly enjoyed by both my daughter and son starting at that about age and they still get played with every day! The SUV, bus and fire engine are favorites at our house. We don't have it but he tractor looks fun too.
I found this car for DD2 at Home Goods: http://www.amazon.com/Tomy-Play-Learn-Puzzle-Sports/dp/B0002VE5BM/ref=sr_1_20?ie=UTF8&qid=1319220150&sr=8-20
she and DD1 love it!
DD2 loves it because she can easily push it....and even pull it back to make it move. DD1 loves to play with it because she takes it apart and then puts it back together. I'm on the hunt to find the others in the series for christmas!

You might look at the Wow toys too. For example, we have this http://www.amazon.com/WOW-Dexter-Digger-Construction-Vehicle/dp/B000VXXHUQ/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&qid=1319227129&sr=8-4
There is a lever on the side for moving the arm up and down. It has a friction motor and actually goes pretty fast forward. Funny as I started writing this my 2.5 year old sat down and started playing with it.
We have also bought some pretty nice trucks from costco lately.

Little Tikes Handle Haulers are fun at that age. My kiddos really liked the plane.
