I get kids coming to my door about once a week trying to sell cookie dough, pizza dough, candles wreaths. I am having trouble just trying to chip in for my kids own school. I feel bad but I have to say no. today my neighbor came by looking to sell a CD. Not even sure what type of CD. I am sure I would never listen to it. Her speech was pls buy a CD to make my future brighter.

Do most people say no? I feel bad but we have cut back on everything- I cant justify buying expesive cookie dough that we wont eat.

I say, "No thank you!" and smile really big. Most of the time, I just don't open the door. I don't buy things from people door to door, period. Ever. I'm hoping that form of sales will die out if I don't encourage it.

ETA: I realize that sounds like I'm being sarcastic, but what I mean is I try to be really polite and friendly while firmly saying "no".

If it's a neighbor we know, we usually end up buying something. For random kids, "no, thank you" unless it's something we would actually use/eat. DH has a harder time saying no.

I usually say, "No thank you, I'm not interested." However, I never have trouble sending solicitors away. My DH on the other hand will buy ANYTHING *IF* the child is from our neighborhood. He'll say, "point to which house is yours." If he seems satisfied that the kid really is from our neighborhood, he'll buy from them. The annoying part is that he sits there and will listen to the person pitch the sale. I'm not as nice, I just tell them right away that I'm not interested and I've had to cut in before when my DH answered the door, since he will just stand there and listen to the person and I butt in and say, "sorry, WE'RE not interested!" As for an adult selling stuff, that is just kind of weird, unless it's their actual job (door to door sales job, which is pretty rare these days). Buying a CD to, "brighten" their future is just odd, even if it's a neighbor, I wouldn't have bought it. Some guy showed up on our doorstep to sell us insurance before and my DH was chatting with him and it pissed me off, b/c for all we know, the guy could have been a con man. I told him we'd call him if we were interested. Who the heck sells insurance door to door????

:yeahthat:

this EXACTLY. for our next door neighbor kid and other kids we know, we usually say yes, otherwise we say no (unless it's Girl Scout cookies..i LOVE those!! :)). DH is really bad about saying no , so a lot of times he doesn't even answer the door unless we know who it is.

Kids really still sell door-to-door? I'm surprised! We did have ONE come in the four years we've lived here, a high school boy selling something for the high school. I wished him luck but declined.

I never answer my door. I moved recently and it's harder to ignore it now because you can see through the front door but I just sit here while they peek through at me. LOL

(in my sympathetic voice) Oh, sorry, I can't. But good luck!

When I lived in LA, all sorts of crazy scammers got underprivileged kids to sell stuff for a totally fake "charity". I got used to saying no. Here, very few kids come door to door. But unless it's a cause I really support, or I know them, or I want the item (ha!) I have no problem saying no.

Thankfully my No Solicitation sign by my doorbell keeps most away.

If the kid is from our neighborhood, I always buy. I know they're working their little butts off out there, and I appreciate their enthusiasm.

I took our oldest up and down our street to sell popcorn for scouts, and he was so thrilled when people bought. It really made his day.

I almost always buy whe I see kids at supermarkets, too. Guess I'm a sucker.

I usually buy or contribute if it is a child I know or who lives in the neighborhood. The kids with candy bars etc I'll sometimes give them the $ for he item but tell them to keep the candy as we will not eat it.
