DH had an interview for a new job on Monday. He really liked the company and the work he'd be doing and we were really hoping something would work out.

He just received an offer (yay!) for about 20% less than the salary requirement (boo!) he gave them in a phone interview a few weeks ago. From what the manager said, if DH accepted the position, he would be the highest paid in his position, so it's not like DH's salary requirement was ever a possibility for the company to offer. He used a vacation day for Monday's interview. Ugh.

The worst part is that he was so excited about the opportunity! Granted, he might have discovered that everything wasn't as rosy when he started working there, but he was excited about the company and the work.

It's easy to say not to take the job b/c of the salary, but he's so unhappy with his current job. But 20% is a LOT of money.

We really thought it could work out. :(

I'm sorry. I can relate.

Dh is in his second month of his new job. He really, really disliked his old job (had been there nearly 12 years) but knew that he would likely not find anything that paid nearly as well.

Long story short, he took a job with much better hours and that still pays a good salary, but for us, it's an over 30% pay cut. It's a major adjustment (I don't think I've ever cooked this much in my life) and we're still adjusting our lifestyle and figuring things out, but it's been a good move. He's much more relaxed and no amount of money would have changed his stress level at the other job.

Hang in there...Dh's quiet job hunt took a LONG time, but I think he ended up in the right place (Ironically in the same building!).

Sorry for the disappointment. Times are tough. If he was offered the top of the company's range though, I don't see how that would look positive for raises and bonuses in the future. GL

Thanks, PPs. We found out a little more about vacation time, etc. and the benefits don't look as great as they could, which makes it easier to turn down. Vacation time increases by 1 week after you've been there 10 years! No incremental increases at all.

Kungjo, good point about raises and bonuses. We talked about that last night and it looks like the new company doesn't do much in the way of bonuses (and forget about raises if DH is at the top of the scale) so that makes the difference in the two companies even greater.

It looks like it's not to be. At least it gave DH the push to talk more to his current manager to see about other opportunities at his current company. We'll see how that goes tomorrow.
