Any nurses or docs want to give their professional read on DH's blood test results? We are trying to get more life insurance and have had to go through some extensive medical screening. The results of his blood test came back and some things are outside what they list as the normal range. I'm not sure what these are or how much to be concerned:
test---------test result------lab range
ALT (SGPT)----62.00U/L--- - -0-45
GGT-----------86.00U/L--- - -2-65
HDL (Chol)-----27.40MG/DL-- 45-66
Triglycerides---159.00MG/DL- -50-150
TIA!

Not a nurse or doc, but did some quick googling. With these numbers, you'd probably see some higher premiums.
ALT - the lower the better. Increased levels of ALT often means that liver disease is present
GGT - also tied to liver function
HDL is the good cholesterol; the higher the better
Triglycerides - indicator for potential heart disease, the lower the better

I think the triglyceride one is the one I worry about since you are over 150. Mine is 139 so below normal, but there isn't an optimal range listed with my results so while 139 is still normal I don't know if it is above the optimal range.

not a doc or nurse but we had to deal with high ALT and GGT (dont do a life insurance exam the same weekend as a bachlor party, but are usually elevated from prolonged alcohol consumption). ALT and GGT can be indicators of liver disease and/or damage including high fatty diet, alcohol, and acetaminophen usage. which all translates to higher premiums.
ETA: we redid the blood work a few weeks later and went from denied to standard rates. i recently spoke to an underwriter about getting additional insurance and she mentioned that you can be on cholestrol meds and not be pentalized as long it is under control.

Don't know a ton, but what the others have mentioned about the liver function tests is true. I also want to mention that liver function tests can be skewed by medications as well. DH has had issues with that before...and we are certain that's what it is because he never drinks at all and when off of certain meds for a long enough period of time, his test results come back normal again.
Just something else to possibly consider.

Were they fasting tests? The numbers need to be addressed in some way and he needs to go to his primary care doctor for follow up. The liver function numbers (ALT & GGT) would need to be followed up, but they don't necessarily indicate problems in just one test. As pp mentioned, many medications can effect them, especially over the counter ones. Alcohol also. The cholesterol numbers indicate follow up for hyperlipidemia. Lifestyle changes can come first, but they may require medications to get in a better range and thus lower cardiac risk factors. All of this means a trip to physician.
