View Full Version : Bad news about 'spreadable butter'

I've been loving Spreadable Butter, thinking "it's just butter mixed with oil to make it easier to spread when cold!" This Fooducate post has turned me against it. Turns out, it uses milk with rBGH growth hormones, and with GMO rapeseed.
http://blog.fooducate.com/tag/rbgh/
This article only mentioned the Land o Lakes spread. I have a similar Olivio product in my fridge, and it does not contain that "rbgh free" label most milks do these days. So, I am going on the assumption it is not growth hormone free.
I'll probably finish up the tub I have, but I won't buy again. It's too bad because I really like the stuff.

We bought a tub of Kerrygold spreadable from Costco and they use milk from cows that are free from growth hormones. They also don't add oil. http://kerrygoldusa.com/press-room/current-press-release/bid/63619/Kerrygold-Introduces-Two-New-Butters

I always assume that all dairy unless otherwise labeled contains hormones. And all canola oil unless organic or from WF or TJS brand is GMO. So basically, if it comes from the grocery store and is not specially labeled, assume it contains these things.
ETA: that doesn't automatically mean it does contain hormones or GMOs but I assume it's guilty unless I know otherwise.
Kerrygold does not use routine antibiotics either and comes from grassed cows on Spring pastures

We're using Kerry Gold spreadable butter right now. I'm curious as to what the difference is between that and the butter in blocks.

I make my own using a recipe from Tosca Reno's Eat Clean book. Just whirl one part softened butter with one part olive oil in the food processor.

What's a butter bell?
What's a butter bell?
Butter bell (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0000VLURQ/ref=pd_lpo_k2_dp_sr_3?pf_rd_p=486539851&pf_rd_s=lpo-top-stripe-1&pf_rd_t=201&pf_rd_i=B000H47H0A&pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf_rd_r=09QZ0Y05XTZSZGYQTG0D)stores butter on the counter and keeps it spreadable without spoilage (so says the amazon info). I don't have one, but they look pretty neat.

Thanks for the heads up. I have been using the land 'o lakes with olive oil. The base commissary sells a German one so I guess I'll just cross my fingers and hope that one is better.

Butter spreads easily if you leave it out of the fridge. Just get a nice butter dish with cover and leave it on the countertop.
My dad grew up on a farm and insisted the butter at our house growing up always stay out of the fridge so he could butter his bread. I have always done the same and in the past 40 years of my life I've seen butter go rancid once.
My dad always used to say not to be afraid of tasting rancid butter because it will never get past your nose.

My butter gets too melty if left out in summer (no central air here).

The EU is much, much stricter about growth hormones (and GMO) than the US, so you'll probably be fine.
try a butter boat. Same convenience as a butter bell but the inner dish of butter sits in an outer dish of water and you can plop in a whole stick without having to form butter into a bell. All 3 pieces go in the dishwasher and truly really works.
I have a white one with no stripe but it looks like it's not available in that color now:

I can't help myself, how does the butter stay cold on warm toast?
My "solution" to all of this is that on the rare occasion I make toast I always make at least two pieces, cut a pat of butter and put in between to melt so I can spread it. Or I set it onto of the toaster over so it can soften while I am making the toast (this melts it though unless I pull it off before the toast is done).

We are avid counter butter bell users. Always cool (in our climate) and always spreadable. That butter boat looks awesome.

I have a butter bell. It's great in cooler temps but once it gets hot the butter gets too melty even with ac on.

We love our butter bell too! Even here in SoCal it stays perfect, only in summer we have to remember to change the water every day or two. I love the idea of the butter boat cause sometimes it's tricky to smash a whole stick of butter into the bell.

Thanks, I will definitely look into it. We have no AC so it becomes very soft when kept outside.

It doesn't. Still tastes better to me that it started cold though. My parents leave their butter out and it just tastes different to me. Can't explain it. Luckily the base commissary sells Lurpak (http://www.lurpak.com/gb/our-products/#lurpak-lighter-speadable-slightly-salted) spreadable butter with vegetable oil so I guess I'll just be buying that from now on.

This is close to what I do. I take about 3-4 sticks of butter and leave them out until they're soft. Then I add olive oil to make a 50/50 blend and whisk together. I pour the mix into containers and refridgerate or freeze. Works great!

Thanks for indulging my curiosity. I am a bit odd about things like that myself. For example, I can't stand to eat butter in solid form. So I never put it on anything if it isn't hot enough to melt it. Makes it even stranger that when I was a toddler, I used to swipe solid butter from the fridge. And now dd will eat solid butter. Yuck. :ROTFLMAO: I just was trying to picture if you let your toast cool so it didn't melt the butter or what.
