I forgot to add that the San Diego Zoo has special Night Zoo hours during summer. If you go, I highly recommend staying through the evening - the animals are so much more active around sunset. The evening entertainment is fun too. You could do Balboa Park in the morning then head to the Zoo in the afternoon and stay through the evening hours.
Nighttime at the Zoo is great. Haven’t been in several years but still remember it feeling much more relaxed in the evening and certain animals being much more active.
The downside to Safari Park is that it’s a much longer drive than the zoo. With such a short trip, maximize your time and stay local.
