I am still debating flu vaccine for my 3yr old....I would have gotten him the thermasol free shot but the Pediatricians office ran out of those and only had the FluMist which is thermasol free.
The Dr indicated the mist may make him sick with flu like symptoms for a couple days.
The 1yr old got his thermasol free shot today.
Neither of my boys are in daycare.
Just not sure what to do.

My 3 year old dd got the mist 1 day after her 3rd birthday and she was absolutely fine. No symptoms after, but I'm sure everyone reacts differently.
My 3yo got the thimerosal free flu mist a couple months ago. If anything happened we didn't notice. It didn't seem to slow her down.
My son received the FluMist last year - age 3.5 - and this year - age 4.5. Both times, he had no reaction.
(That said, we are going to vax for H1N1, but I am waiting for the inactive vax for my son. My daughter is 19 months, so her seasonal flu vax was - and her H1N1 vax will be - the inactive injection. My husband and I are going to get the H1N1 mist this weekend.)
My 5 year old got the flu mist this year & missed a week of school afterwards.
He ran a fever (only about 100-101) for 5-6 days after. His symptoms were pretty mild, he really did not feel that bad. Just a little headache and tired.
Of course I will NEVER know if it was from the mist or a coincindence (a virus he would've gotten anyway).
I don't regret doing the mist though & would consider it again.
It is supposed to provide much better coverage than the injection.
Yes, he did get sick after..but not as bad as full blown flu.
For the H1N1 I am going to do the shot though.

DS1 got the flu mist this past Sat. He has been completely fine.
I have 4 boys and we are skipping the flu vaccine. We have never gotten them. My oldest 2 were vax'd on schedule Nathan was delayed on all shots after 18months and Jack is very delayed.
I had an interesting discussion with my sister who is an ER manager and none of her staff is allowed the flu mist. If they choose to get the vaccine it has to be the shot. None of her pregnant nurses are allowed (knowing) contact with potential h1n1 patients

DS got Flu Mist last year at 3. I didn't feel like the fight I knew we'd have if we got the shot. (Yep. I'm a bad Mommy.) Didn't have any symptoms of flu. I think that's just one of those possibilities, not a definate. That said, if you're getting the H1N1 when it comes into the office, you have to wait a certain amount of time if you did the FluMist. With the shots, there's no wait time between the shots.
FWIW, my 3 year old got Flu Mist two weeks ago, and has been absolutely fine.

As a PP said, you cannot get both mists (H1N1 and seasonal) within a certain period of time, generally 4 weeks. Since children under 10 need 2 doses, if you want mist for both it can be logistically challenging. So you may want to get the H1N1 series now and wait on the seasonal. Or get the mist with one and a shot with the other.
We got the seasonal mist for DS who is just 2 and he was absolutely fine. My only regret is that now we need to wait for the 4 weeks to be up before he can get the H1N1 mist. Of course, by the time his ped actually gets it in, that time will be up any way at this rate...
I would always do the mist if possible. DS isn't around anyone that is immunosuppressed that I know of, and obviously it's more pleasent than getting a shot, and like Beth said, it seems to have a better immune response than the shot anyway. I know a lot of people on these boards are concerned about vaccines in general, and live vaccines specifically. But, I quite disagree.
My DD is 3, but is turning 4 in a few weeks. She just went in for a flu vaccine. CRIED her eyes out upon hearing she was getting a shot. Then doc came in and offered the mist. That turned her around completely. We explained that she had to breath in the mist and not cry. SHe was an angel! She does see me take a nasal spray almost daily so Doc said that probably helped.
Does your DC hate shots? I imagine so, and then the fluMist looks like a piece of cake (and really it is).
My 3 yo has gotten a flumist 3 times (last year and this year for seasonal, and this year for h1n1). She was totally fine. (And she does have a history of strong reactions to vaxxes, the MMR made her fairly sick as a baby) :)
My boy is okay with shots but there isnt a thermosal free available for him at his Ped so thats why we were going to do the mist.
I hear so may pros and cons on the vaccine from other Mommies and Drs that I am soooo confused.
My baby got his flu shot and up to this point thought my 3yr old would get one too..DH got his but I hadnt planned on getting one and never have in the past.
Have an appt tomorrow with the nurse for the mist if they dont run out between now and then.
DS had flumist last year and this year (for seasonal flu) and is getting h1n1 mist tomorrow.
He did fine with it, no side effects that I noticed.
FTR, he hates getting the mist almost as much as he hates shots, so no benefit for us in that respect.

My 4 yo got the flu mist for seasonal flu and H1N1. She has had no problems.
DS did great with it. We had him "sniff like a flower"-no side effects at all
