Default Warm winter outerwear for 1 yr old

    Hi all!
I need advice on winter stuff for DD who turns a year old. We live in Maine so its very very cold, and I was wondering what I should get her for the winter. Do you recommend snowsuits? Down filled? Polyester filled? Separate coats and pants instead of snowsuits. I'm hoping she'll be outdoors almost every day and want her to be as warm as possible; also, we don't drive long distance a whole lot. Should I get the LLBean down filled snowsuit? Any other recs?
    Thanks a billion in advance!

I'm a New England mom too :) And when my kids were 1, they hated to be outside for any length in a down snowsuit. They just couldn't move!! Plus the snowboots would get stuck in a snowbank, then the tears,....

I found that all three did best in a fleece Polartec LLbean bunting, fleece helmet-style hat, and a nice warm "Bundle-me" blanket for the stroller. Plus the fleece bunting was easy to manage in a carseat.

Pam doesn't the bunting get wet in the winter and with snow? Forgive my ignorance, I've lived all my life in warm places and am a complete ignoramus about winter wear...the move from Texas to Maine has left me a little clueless :P I can barely figure out what will be warm enough for me, let alone 1 yr old.
    Thanks for your help!

If she is going to be outdoors almost every day than I would recomend a one piece snow suit. My son had a snowsuit like this one by Columbia with fleece lined on the inside and an outer layer that is water proof. It worked out realy well and kept him warm and dry.

They also make a 2 piece which would be good too. I think its called the santa peak suit.

I hope this helps. We are in New England too and it can get cold here in the winter.

Ooh, thank you! That looks just like something that DD would wear and be warm in!

I would go with two things:

For outside play in the snow - an actual snowsuit. We had a Hanna snowsuit from ebay last year that was poly filled and was plenty warm, but DS wasn't outside all that much since he wasn't walking yet.

For the car, a fleece one piece like the LL Bean bunting. Unless you are comfortable just using a fleece jacket/hat instead of needing a full length item for in and out of the car (it's not super cold here usually but I always felt better transporting DS in the bunting.) You don't want to use a regular snowsuit in a carseat -- they are too poofy and would compress too much in an accident which could lead to injuries.

I live in Canada and swear by Mountain Equipment Co-op (similar to your REI) outdoor gear for my children (www.mec.ca). They use high tech fibres, so the suits and jackets are really lightweight, but super warm. They are also very durable fabrics.

We use the fleece "Ursus" bunting for in and out of the car (Polartec fleece), but the toaster suits for outdoor play. I also like the Chuck Roast bunting bags for in and out of the car...also very warm without the bulk www.chuckroast.com These are also Polartec fleece.

The MEC rainsuits are also amazing if you live in a wet climate.

Ditto the MEC recommendation (from a fellow Canadian). We have the Chuck Roast and the Ursus (in different sizes) and the super warm Toaster. I bought all of them at consignment stores and they have held up phenomenally. In fact, check out second-hand shops for snow stuff - they are generally in great condition because they are worn so little before the kid grow out of them.
