Default How long does Formula last once made??

We just started supplementing breast milk with formula and I have done almost no research. We're using a special hypo=allergenic type on the dr's recommendation due to a family history of allergies and Dante's, already proven, sensitive skin (he's allergic to the WATER here. Oh, what fun). It comes in powder with no ready made option.

My question is: how long once you make up a batch of formula does it last? I've been chucking it if it has been more than 24 hours, but now I'm wondering if I need to be that careful--or am I being not careful enough? Does it need, like breastmilk, to be stored in the fridge once made? Can it be reheated, or once it's been reheated how long is it good for? I feel like such a newbie and the box was less than forthcoming (well that, and it was in German...)

    TIA!

    Paula,
Here are several sets of instructions in English from different makers

    http://www.welcomeaddition.com/display.cfm?id=91&sub=96

Two of the three say formula is good for 48 hours. Carnation however says that for formula made from a powder only 24 hours (concentrate and ready to use should be used within 48).

That's the reason I included the three websites so you can read it for yourself

    Paula:

I just wanted to write and say that I noticed Dante's new picture. He's so cute! I also loved the pictures from the website.

Sorry, but I don't know anything about formula yet.

    Paula-

We use Similac and make a big batch once a day (Sophie goes through a bottle roughly every three hours), however it can be stored in a fridge for up to 48 hours.

As far as bottles that have been warmed BUT HAVEN'T BEEN GIVEN TO THE BABY, you can put them back in the fridge.

The problems start if the baby has taken some of the milk, thereby introducing saliva into the bottle. The enzymes in the saliva start the breakdown of the milk and also create bacteria.

My pediatrician said we can save 1/2 used bottles only if they've been out of the fridge for less than 1/2 hour, providing we use them for the very next feeding. I asked him this because my heart broke everytime we were dumping 1/2 used bottles - all that money literally down the drain!

Just remember NEVER warm a bottle in a microwave.

Thanks for the tips. I'd been using the 24 hour rule (made then stored in teh fridge until it was time), so it's good to hear that
my instincts were right. I'll continue on our merry way. Supplementing, pumping, mixing, boiling. I feel like so much of my life revolves around milk of one sort or another these days.

And I must say that after 8 months of breastfeeding, it's a LOT easier to dump a 1/2 bottle off formula down the drain than breast milk.

Thanks also for the sweet note about DS. He's got hair issues, no question. My volume; DH's managability (or lack there of)!
