Default Cocktail casual? What does that mean?

DH and I are going to an event next weekend that requires "cocktail casual" dress. The event is at a zoo, so they also highly recommend that you wear shoes that are comfortable to walk in.

What does cocktail casual mean? If someone could post some pics of attire that would qualify, I'd be grateful (especially if they're in size 16 lol). :)

Cocktail denotes the length of the dress (to the knee or a little shorter), plus the assumption that it's a time period where cocktails would be served (like 4-7pm)...so whatever you would wear that's a bit fancier than afterwork but not evening wear. Casual should denote (especially) the footwear being more casual for women, men not needing a sport coat necessarily (but prob a tie) and less wool pants--more like khakis or cotton/twill pants.

The best thing to aim for would be a v-neck sheath dress in a fun/slimming color (like Navy blue or chocolate brown) with a light wrap or cardigan if you're self concious about your arms (I am!) and some light/minimal jewelry. I think a heeled sandal would look great for shoes...no hose required!

    Default Thanks!

Thanks, Larissa! I'll keep your suggestions in mind when I go shopping this weekend!

Can you help out DH, too?! :) He works in a very casual office and wears jeans every day and t-shirts more than polo-style shirts. What do you think for him? Keep in mind that we're in Texas and the event is from 7:30-11:30pm. I know you mentioned a few mens ideas in your post, but I thought I'd ask for specific guidance. :)

    This would be great, with:

    or w/out the jacket:
    http://tinyurl.com/2qd5c8
A striped long sleeved button-down shirt w/ a belt and black wool or wool blend pant (since it is evening).

    This is nice:

A silk knit short sleeved top with a nice khaki or silk pant. You could throw a sport coat over the top and once you get there take it off since it might be hot (outside at zoo, right?)

    Similar (higher style):

    Also very nice:

A sateen-sheened cotton polo (great in the heat), belted with a smooth-front khaki pant. Again, b/c it's a "fancy t-shirt" you might want to bring along a sport coat (you can get these for super cheap at Godwill and Salvation Army/Thift stores if he doesn't own one already). They key to getting a sport coat from thrift stores (since you know it won't ever match the pants) is to aim for black or blue.

Good luck finding a nice coordinating outfit. If my DH were going, I'd put him in his charcoal, long sleeved button-down from Banana Republic with a dark silver tie and flat-front khakis (w/ black belt and shoes). He can always roll up his sleeves...and won't have to carry around a sport coat.

LMAO, Larissa, you sound just like me getting DH ready for outings!

When I met the man he had six things in his closet, two being this horrid heathered grey matching vest and parachute pants. He hates buying clothes, so one summer I went to Gap, Express Men and Banana Republic every week to rifle through the sale racks. By the time he got home from deployment I had over $1,500 worth of high-end clothing for roughly $350. His mother wrote me a personal thank-you note. He looks soooo incredibly hot when he dresses up. Too bad Sundays only come once a week. ;)

LOL! I totally agree with you on the tone for dressing for such an event. You worded it so well.
