Default How should I fill my new play room?

DH and I are finally getting around to cleaning out our huge (13 X 19 foot) loft and converting it into a play room for DS. We have absolutely nothing of use in it and so are starting with a blank slate. I have been looking at my IKEA catalog but get overwhelmed every time I open it. Does anyone have any ideas on what toys and/or funiture to put in it?

    Thanks!

Here is what we have in our playroom:

A train table w/ Thomas the train
    A Berchet Kitchen
Storage bins from Target that hold his smaller toys (puzzles, puppets, small cars, etc)
The Little tikes activity Garden ( I am about to put this in storage so that put in a small table and chairs)
    A wooden rocking horse
A book shelf filled w/ tons of books
A large orange tub filled w/ toys

If I were you I would focus on the storage bins w/ the smaller age appropriate toys and a reading area.....as your DS gets older you can incorporate more play areas. hth

I aree with the PP that it's probably better to start off with a few things and then add as your DS is older. I think some small, low shelves for books, toys, etc are great. DS has a train table, but we got it when he was 1. A nice comfie chair or corner of pillows is great for relaxing and reading. My DS has the one from Pottery Barn, which I love.
I think for a 6 month old, a lot of open space for crawling is best. We had very few toys for my DS until he was around one.

Ideally here's what I'd want in a playroom:

my computer so I can browse BBB while DD plays (important things first :-))
    play kitchen
    easel
short shelfs to store big Little People pieces
    child sized table with chairs
storage for books (either a bookshelf or the display kind)

That's all I can think of for now, what fun to turn a room into a playroom!

I think what would be really cool is a reading pit! Something like this!

That reading pit is awesome!! I agree with what someone said - I'm sure it will get filled more quickly than you realize!

What about a play house? If you don't want to spend the money on a plastic one - I recently got one of the pop-up ones on clearance at Ross for $10.99. It's a great space filler and DS loves it... also IKEA has some great shelving for toys...

I think something like this from Ikea is perfect for organizing toys. http://tinyurl.com/4tuoa They have baskets that fit very nicely into the shelves for a Pottery Barn look.

I would make a little lounge area with lots of pillows, bean bag chairs, or soft chairs and a nice rug. You may want to put a tv with a DVD player in there if you allow your DS to watch movies.

Also a table and chairs set or a train table would be really nice. My DS has the Little Tikes Basketball hoop and he loves that as well.

Thanks everyone for your great suggestions. I feel a lot better about planning the space, now. I think that I will concentrate on shelving and seating for now and then gradually fill the space with other stuff later. I am 99% decided on a PBK anywhere chair for DS. Now if I could only find the perfect chair/couch for me....

    Thanks again!
