Default ? about the upcoming new Latch???

Forgive my ignorance...what is the new Latch system I keep hearing about that will be different on late 2002 carseat models? I am due in April...probably will buy one of the 2001 models so I have one ready...will I need one of the newer ones eventually?

Latch is this new system designed to make it easier to install a carseat correctly in your car.

It requires two parts: the latch connectors on the carseat, and the latch hooks in the car.

The connectors on the carseat can be retrofit on some models, and actually come pre-installed on some seats. That might be what you are thinking of.

The latch hooks in the car generally can't be retrofit (VW is the exception). They started including them on some 1999 vehicles, and have been phasing toward 2 hook sets in most cars (2002).

So if you don't have the hooks in your car now, and don't plan to buy a brand new car in the next year or less, then don't worry about latch when buying an infant seat.

Instead, concentrate on finding an infant seat with a five point harness, a front harness adjuster, and an adjustable base. I suggest the Graco SnugRide if it fits well in your car.

By the way, latch does make it easier to install your seat, but it is only safer in that you have a greater chance of installing your seat correctly. There is no safety difference between a proper latch installion and a proper seat belt installation.
