Default How would you pronounce "BRONWYN"

I ask because pre birth and since I have felt it to be with an "on" sound in there...

My dearest friend says it with an "own" sound in there...

I felt it the same name so never thought or do feel a need to say it otherwise or correct her...

But typical of the way we speak: Karsh says it soooooo sweetly (he has a cherub voice) and calls her "Baby Blownwyn" (the own sound) and thus in our fashion of picking up what they say and using them as nicknames (like Karsh is Karffff due to Tristan and now Karfu because he calls me mammu and Steve dadu) we have started calling her "Baby Blownwyn" (own sound)...
EDITED TO CLARIFY NOT THE SOUND OF BROWN...MORE LIKE OWN-CLONE-DRONE-WITH A LONG SOUNDING "O"...

But to make a long post even longer :)
I am now wondering if as we go further and "Baby Blownwyn" is no longer used which is prettier Bronwyn (on sound) or Bronwyn (own sound). And if anyone knows the true welsh pronounciation I would love to know.

An example is my "Neve" is like "EVE" with an N
Pams "Neve" and the acress is like "EV" with an N

Thanks if you have hung in there this long...

When you say "own" sound, do you mean as in the word "brown" or as in the word "own"?

Everything I've heard suggest that it's the "on" sounds. Love the name, by the way. Meredith was almost a Bronwyn.

This is a funny one for me...

My vote is for Bron-wyn, with the "on" sound. As Bronwyn gets older, people are going to read her name and assume it's pronounced that way, and she will be spending a lot of time correcting them if you go with the -own sound. My name is not pronounced the way it is spelled (it's pay-tra, the Dutch pronunciation), and I've been explaining that to everyone and their brother since I hit kindergarten. I'm sure you've been through the same thing yourself.

Also, don't forget that the boys will eventually get the pronunciation right - I was called Fay-fa for years by a couple of kids I babysat for, and boy weren't they proud of themselves when they could get it right.

As for your friend, if you say "Bron-wyn" in front of her (to the baby, of course) often enough, she should eventually get it right, too :)

    Okay, I LOVE the picture!

I don't know the Welsh pronunciation, but I really like Bronwyn pronounced like "On". It's how I've always pronounced it.

    Okay, according to this page:

    http://www.mythome.org/celticnames.html

Bronwyn should be pronounced the way you and I do it. With a short, "O" sound as in "On".

Default Petra- glad you shared that it is "pay-tra"

I've been calling you Petra :)

And oh yes I have spent my life explaining my name...
funny thing is I usually can get it thru people's head by just saying "eve with an n" :)

But I can't win on the phone if I say to a spouse or secretary who answers a phone "it's Neve" they say "who is me????"

If I say "it's Neve A_______ani" they then say "well how many Neve's do you think we know???"...so I can't win!!!!

Love your name by the way!

    Neve,

I don't think I have told you before but from 3rd grade through high school I had a penpal from New Zealand named Bronwyn, so I have always liked the name. I have always pronounced it with the "on" sound. My mother and her mother still write to each other from time to time, and they have spoken on the phone a few times (years ago). I should ask my mother if she knows how they pronounce it!

    ETA: What a sweet picture!
