Default How to get smoke smell out of cardboard?

OK, I got a toddler shopping cart off freecycle and they threw in a bunch of play food boxes. They are the kind where you buy them flat and then fold them into boxes. Well it turns out they were smokers (I could tell when I picked it up) and the boxes still smell after being in the garage for over a month. The cart though seems to be OK.

Anyone have ideas on an easy way to remove the smell? Would baking soda in a trash bag work?

I would like to use them as we are getting a play kitchen soon, but I'll just put them in the recycling if I don't get the smell out. (Don't want to re-freecycle as the giver is an Admin and I don't want to seem ungrateful or offend)

You could try the baking soda but, honestly, depending on how old your DC is, it might not be worth the effort.

I started collecting real boxes for dd to use with her grocery cart and they were toast in a matter of days. I've learned my lesson to reuse plastic containers.
