i like to use tart burners for alot of good smell, they tend to let off more scent then a reg candle. you can get a burner for pretty cheap and then experiment with different brands of tarts. you can usually burn them a few times befor they start to loose smell.

I'm a big fan of the Yankee Candle Housewarmers. My entire first floor smells good when I burn them.

Favorite scents are Stormwatch, Splash of Rain, Clean Cotton (great for bathrooms!) and Sun(something) Linen.

IMO, the best candles are Trapp brand. They come in a lot of different yummy scents and they are very strong. Love them!

Not much help in the candle department, but wanted to add that if you have carpeting, consider getting some carpet freshener (powder that you sprinkle on and vacuum up). I once rented/housesat for an elderly couple and the whole place smelled old--it didn't take all the smell away, but it helped.

Gold Canyon candles!! The scents are incredible and will spread throughout your apt. Also, they have two wicks so they burn evenly and they last forever.

I really like the Illumination candles. They burn all the way down evenly and don't leave the "edges" around the center. The mini jars last a long time, and the scents are good. www.illuminations.com

I just got an electric Yankee tart warmer and LOVE it! First of all, the tarts are so cheap, and secondly they scent the room so much better than any candles I've ever used. When I used to burn candles it seemed like the scent wasn't the same as when you smell it not burning. With the tarts I also don't need to worry about soot(sp?) and smoke.

I got my tart warmer at Linens & Things.
