Default What is your favourite hair color?

Spin off from Marisa's hair color thread.

I have been using Loreal Excellence myself. I have not tried anything else, so I am not sure if there are better ones out there.
    Curious to find out more.

Which brand do you use/ what is your fave?
Which ones have you tried in the past?

A friend of mine told me she gets some pigments from whole foods and makes her own hair color. This is really new to me. Anyone with experience with that?

    Thanks ladies.

    Default Hena!

I use the Hena from Whole Foods: I use the red, sister uses the black. I love it, though it does make a mess in the bathroom. I add tea, eggs, olive oil to mine and it conditions my hair too.

i am now looking for an Indian or Turkish store where I can buy it in bulk.

    Default RE: Hena!

Oh, so it is the henna from whole foods.
I have done the henna routine for soo long (abt 12-15 years) that I no longer have the patience for it.

The whole mix it, leave it over night, apply, wait for a couple of hours and oh, keep it from dripping in between was getting on my nerves.

Do you do all that too? I did not know about the black henna also?

Anyways, Indian stores only have the natural henna, which is the red henna. I am pretty sure, most Indian stores dont have anything else.

Check if you have any Indian friends who are visiting India shortly. Henna is much better (fresher) there. I am not going for a year, otherwise, I would have brought you some.

My favorite hair color is brown.

Sorry, couldn't resist. I haven't colored my hair in a few years but when I did I really liked the Hydrience creme hair color. I thought it gave very good color saturation.

    Default overnight?

I don't leave mine overnight, I do not see how I could without staining all my bedding etc. Little over an hour is all I can muster. I use the hair drier sometimes too, it helps the color "take" faster.

How can you leave it on all night, do you use a special thing to wrap your head? Oh, and I don;t know whether this is what your friend does, I just mentioned that Whole Foods is where i get my henna as it's the only place I've found it. On the black one, my sister has dark brown hair that the black henna just darkens even more. I doubt it would turn blonde hair into brown or black...

I have no Indian friends, sadly. I do know it's fresher there and it would make for such a brilliant color. Dad goes to Turkey frequently and may have him get me some there.

EDIT: Wait, I see you make it THEN leave it overnight...Why?? Mine says to just mix with hot water (tea , in my case), and then wait till cool enough so I don't burn my scalp, and apply! You must have a better henna!

    Default RE: overnight?

I did not mean leave it over night on your hair. Henna is supposed to mix well in iron containers, specially if you let it stand over night. So, most people I know in India, mix the henna with tea, lemon, egg etc in a cast iron container and let is stand overnight. The next morning, they apply the paste and let it dry on their hair.

I guess I did not mention that :)

I can't imagine, how I would keep it on my head overnight. I have trouble keeping it fot a cpl of hours.

Next time I go to India, I can get some for you, but that is a long time from now. The turkish henna is supposed to be equally good, if not better.

    Sorry for the confusion.

You are so kind. I may well take you up on your offer as I plan to do the henna thing for a long time. I get compliments from strangers on my hair color(when i do bother to do something about it, that is!) :)

So the tea/lemon, etc are hot when they mix it? I was afraid if left too long in the hot liquids the hena would lose its coloring qualities...Which accounts for my sometimes burnt scalp (that, and the fact that I have zero patience!).

Yup, they can be hot. I would enough water to mix the henna, boil it, dip in a couple of tea bags. Once the bags are out, mix the henna, squeeze a full lemon into it and let it sit the whole night.
So, no problems with burnt scalp there ;-). Actually the henna mixture gets really cool.
