Default How much fluoride does a 2-year-old need for healthy teeth?

And how do you get it to them, if you live in a community that doesn't have fluoridated tap water? Dental recommendations seem to warn against using fluoridated toothpaste before they can spit it out, which Ishy definitely isn't doing yet. Our tap water isn't fluoridated, and my mother and I (who both grew up with this same non-fluoridated water system) both have very bad teeth so I want to do whatever I can to try to prevent that.

    Hi,

I don't know exactly what the amount is, but where I am pediatricians prescribe it for children. It comes either in drops or chewable pills.

Our pedi uses drops for kids starting at 6 mo. to 3 years. Then at 3 years my DD started a little purple pill. She loves it and says it tastes like grapes.

We also don't have fluoridated water and DD takes a peach flavored flouride prescription. It is only 1/2 mL I believe. Or at least I know it is the 1/2 mark on the dropper. She loves it and often reminds me to give it to her at breakfast. We don't give it to her when we travel because we are nervous about overdoing fluoride. And the bottle lasts a long time!

We don't have fluoridated tap water where we live (northern NJ) and we've been giving them prescription vitamins with fluoride (drops when they were little, although I was never too diligent about giving them until they were over 15 mos old. When my older DD turned 2, the doctor started prescribing chewable vitamins with fluoride).

I give both my dd's chewable fluoride pills. My 2 yo takes .25MG tablets and my 5 yo takes .50MG ones. There is a liquid form, which they both HATED, and I wasn't as diligent giving to them because it was always a fight. Now that I give it to them in a pill form, they get one daily. We have well water.

    HTH!
