Help! We need a washing machine and maybe a dryer ASAP
The washing machine died today (filled up with water but won't agitate or spin the water out so now it's just sitting there with wet laundry) and the dryer has been on it's way out for quite a while now. It takes me about two hours to dry one load. Anyway, we can't really afford to replace either right now but we don't have a choice. I need to know where to find the best deal, what to get, and whether we should replace both at one time or wait until the dryer officially bites the dust before replacing it. We had a repair man look at the dryer and he said there was nothing that could be done to fix it. The washing machine we bought used as is at least ten years old so it's probably time to just get a new one. It's been in sad shape for a long time. So any insight or advice would be extremely helpful. I need to get somethign tomorrow because I have tons of laundry that needs to be done including a pail of nasty dirty diapers.

RE: Help! We need a washing machine and maybe a dryer ASAP
We bought scratch/dent washer and dryer 8 years ago at a Sears Outlet store. Their prices were phenomenal and both of ours issues, as are most there, were strictly cosmetic. I *highly* recommend them to anyone who's looking for appliances.

I will but Costco is over an hour away and we would have to borrow a truck or something to be able to take something home. We just figured out that a plastic switch broke which is why the spin cycle won't work right now but it doesn't explain why the agitation cycle has been getting less and less effective. I've been putting in half loads but filling up the machine all the way in an attept to get the clothes clean. DH can't stand the thought of spending money so wants to just jury rig the switch. We must spend a fortune in extra water and electricity between all the extra loads and the excessive drying time.

Great idea. I'll see if we have one nearby. I don't care what they look like as long as they work.

Yeah, that's what we did. It's definitely worth checking out--you can go to Sears.com and check for an outlet store (hopefully) near you.

RE: Help! We need a washing machine and maybe a dryer ASAP
Just in case...I was at a Sears Repair Center today to pick up my lawn mower (which died...and they replaced the entire engine for free under warranty in less than a week). Anyways (love Sears), at the repair center they had all sorts of rebuilt tools, vacuums, appliances and....WASHERS AND DRYERS! It may or may not be the same as their outlet, which is likely just cosmetic damage, but at the repair center they had all sorts of scratch & dent, odds/ends, and remanufactured washers and dryers. They all are tested and given brand new parts for mistakes made in manufacturing; they carry the same warranty as brand new; and they go for hundreds less than retail. There was an HE5 for $900 in champagne beige, a blue HE4 for $700 and charcoal HE3t for $650. That puts energy and water efficiency within a comfortable price range.
Anyways, worth a look in case there isn't a designated "Outlet" near you. My area (of <500K population) has 3 repair centers that also sell appliances, so check it out.

Thanks for the tip. There is a repair center literally down the street from us about 10 minutes (discovered that last year when our brand new lawn mower died and they repaired it) so I'll check them out tomorrow. I really don't care what they look like or if they match. I just want something that works and doesn't take me two hours per load. Our laundry piles up like crazy because it takes so long to get anything done.
ETA: The nearest outlet is in pittsburgh which is over an hour away so this is a great alternative.
