Default Would you choose leaks & blowouts or rashes?

After cding for a couple of months now, dd is still getting rashes if she naps or goes to bed in cloth. I've tried it with fleece liners and without, with different inserts, etc. No matter what, if she's in cloth for more than an hour or so, she gets a rash. She never, not once, got a rash in disposables.

BUT she goes through several outfits a day, and never wears pjs more than one night in a row, if she's wearing a disposable b/c of leaks and blowouts.

So what we're doing now is putting her in disposables when she sleeps (which means pjs are washed after EVERY wearing) and cds during the day.

    What would you do?

    Thanks,
    Jude

    Jude,
Could it be your detergent giving her a rash?

This is what i do sometimes when I need the bulk of a disposable but the absorbency and trimness of a dispie. I put a dispie on her and then put a prefold over that and snappi it. Yes, that is right, i am a freak. Would this work for you at night?

    Jude,

How about putting a cover over the disposable dipe for naps and at night? Might solve the problem.

I agree that the rash could be a problem with your wash routine. You were only doing one wash, right? So there might be too much detergent left in the dipes, and it is irritating her skin. The only way to resolve that, unfortunately, is to strip your diapers, which will be a pain with your coin-op machines.

In a pinch, I'd do what Nita suggests and put a cover over the disposable. But if you get a lot of leaks and blowouts, you probably need a larger size diaper and possibly even a different brand.

I would make sure you have all your detergent out of your diapers....and also, what about putting a little cream on her bumm before bed? That way she has a little more protection. If you are worried about staining use a fleece liner or something you dont mind getting a little cream on. It will prevent your rash and you wont have to worry about leaks as with the disposies.

Well, I must say that the usual effect of less rash in CDs than in sposies was unfortunately not the case in our household, either. DS is a rashy guy. It took me a long time and a lot of different variables before I finally got the rash under control. BUT we DID get it under control, and I almost never use the sposies.

Diaper rash creme is an important preventative for us. Do you use it much? I experimented and the best stuff for us is Triple Paste, followed closely by Burt's Bees and Boudreaux's Butt Paste. (the butt paste might stain, though, so keep that in mind). Every kid is different so you may have to experiment, too. I know Aquaphor works really well for a lot of babies.

Do you use a wool or fleece cover at night and for naps? That's a must for DS to keep the rash at bay. It lets his bum "breathe".

I also tried a couple different things when washing the diapers. I've found that a little vinegar in a downy ball (so it releases into the rinse cycle) is very helpful, and I do one more rinse after that. Also, the best detergent I've found is Bi-O-Kleen. It's all natural, and doesn't irritate DS's skin. A little bit goes a long way.

Some naked-butt time daily is very helpful. My ped tells me that the only kids who never get diaper rash are kids who don't wear diapers.

All that said, I know that many parents have found that using sposies at night and for naps is what works best for them. That's OK too! If the leaks are a big problem with that solution, though, I'd suggest moving up a size and then maybe putting a cover over the sposie.
