Thread: What is a normal amount of time between CD changes?

Default What is a normal amount of time between CD changes?

With disposables I usually could easily go 4-5 hours between changes. I know that's not necessarily a good thing but changing every 2 hours is very difficult when you have a little one that hates having their diaper changed. Amelia seems to go through cloth diapers so quickly. My covers haven't come in the mail yet so I'm using AIO's. Covers and fitteds will really help I'm sure, but what is normal? Is trying to find a solution that will allow me to go 3-4 hours unreasonable? I'm just trying to figure out what I should expect and what my goal should be. With Linnea, I been able to figure out what works to go that long. Is that a bad thing?

For a toddler, it is probably ok to wait a bit longer between changes as long as they are dry. Toddlers seem to stay drier for longer. However, if the child is clearly wet then I would change. For the baby, I would change more frequently than 4 or 5 hours. The baby is probably sitting in a fairly wet diaper which can lead to diaper rashes. There were some times when I would be changing my younger baby every hour.

Oh, I didn't mean I was changing them every 4-5 hours. I probably didn't write that very well. I'm changing my baby about every three hours or so which I figured was pretty good. Even with disposables, I didn't normally go 4-5 hours; I just could if I needed to. The problem is that I can't get anything to last longer than a couple hours on my toddler. I would like to find something that works to make things last a little longer.

    What she said. :)

When Kaya was younger, I was definitely changing her more like 1.5-2 hours. Basically as soon as she was wet or poopy. Now that she is a toddler, I can actually go 4-5 hours sometimes without changing because she stays dry (and non-poopy) for that long. Yes, there will be times when she pees about an hour after changing, but that all depends on what she's eaten.

Yesterday she was in the same diaper for 6 hours, but she also went to the potty 4 times in between. :P

So you're looking for something more absorbent for your toddler? What are you using right now?

You're still asking too much from your AIOs! They are the lightweights of cloth diapering, generally speaking. A good fitted + a good cover, or a good pocket stuffed well, will last much, much longer than an AIO.

Oh, I don't need AIO's to last that long. I've decided I'm mainly going to use those for daycare and they change her every two hours so it shouldn't be a problem there and then I won't lose the money I've invested in them. I always thought Amelia was a light wetter, so I thought I could get away with AIO's more easily. I guess I should have listened to all your advice a little more closely. :( I'm totally open to whatever would be the best, but I'm thinking fitteds of some sort and a cover or pockets. Probably fitteds and a cover at home and pockets for out and about. I feel most confident using fitteds and a cover with Linnea so figure that will probably work best for Amelia as well. I just wanted to know what a realistic goal would be. I have a bumpy cover, a wool day/night stacinator, 2 little caboose envelope fitteds and three peewells coming. So far of what I have already, her berryplush AIO is by far the best. That I actually like pretty well even if it is a little bulky. I've already resold the LHC's so that leaves me with a few DD's. The first couple seemed to be working pretty well the first couple of days, so I bought a couple more used ones. Wish I had waited on that, but too late now. So that's where I'm at now. What should I try next?

Is there any way you can add doublers to your AIOs? I stick a JB or MOE insert under the soaker of the Angelwrap, if I think there's any chance that diaper changing could be delayed. You could even use a tri-folded microfiber towel. Cheap and easy to find. And if it doesn't work, they are great cleaning rags.

When you say DDs, do you mean Daisy-Doodles? Those were definitely the least absorbent AIOs I ever had. And my DS was not a heavy wetter. It would be difficult to add doublers to those. :(

Of all the AIOs I've tried, the only one I trust for longer periods between changes is my AngelDry felted jersey AIO. I even use that for naps.

Otherwise, pockets really are the best option for customizing absorbency. I'm a huge fan of pockets - we also use aplix pockets for daycare.

fuzzibunz are our heavy wetter nighttime diaper of choice, so i would try them. larges are really large on skinny kids. so consider the petite toddler size. and i find motherease airflow covers to be bomb proof. i would try one with your fitteds. i am happy to loan you one to try out- just send me an email. i have them in sizes small, medium and large.

i just generallyl try to change every 2 hrs or so but my DD isn't a heavy wetter so i can go as much as 4 hrs if needed or if i forget. it's not as bad with a fleece-lined pocket because she doesn't feel the wetness as much.
