We're spellers, too! Hannah is 5 1/2 and starting to read so she is figuring out what we are spelling now!
I think this is pretty funny because many of us seem to spell the same words - the potentially tantrum-prone words if our little toddlers don't get them. LOL Around here, we spell cookie, park, pool and ice cream too. That's about it. DS hasn't started spelling back, thankfully.
Mommy to Justin (13 years) & Ashlyn (8 years)
So funny your DS caught on to that! We also spell out words when we know they'll trigger his persistently asking for or wanting something. I think it's fine!
Unfortunately, DS learned what i-c-e spells. :( We may have to switch to f-r-o-z-e-n y-o-g-u-r-t! :P

I used to do this all the time, of coarse now since my girls are older...they know what i am saying and blurt it out LOL }( so i have pretty much given up.
Don't think i have ever thought of it as rude, maybe it is? i dunno it's something i have done as well as my family for years so i think nothing of it.

We spell in front of DS. It's usually for some kind of food that we don't want him to have.
Mommy to 2 DS's (2003 and 2007)
Jill, I am with you! I do share, but it ain't easy! And I find that the more he wants my food, the less I want to share it. but I keep telling myself that it isn't right that I'm so protective of my food!
We do spell some stuff, and just FYI, certain words, when they are spelled (ie. cake) sound a lot like the real word when you spell them. From my experience, that can get you into trouble, so be prepared w/ descriptions that don't sound like the word (ie. that baked, frosted dessert) instead.
We alternate a lot between spelling and using different descriptors. Both DH and I feel like translators a lot!
Lucy and Andrea,
It is comforting to know that I'm not the only one! Today DH, a friend, Ellie, and I met for lunch at this BBQ place. Our friend offered Ellie a slice of her bread, and I was relieved b/c I didn't want to share mine! How bad am I, LOL?!
