Paint and wood for wooden blocks

Hi---
We want to make wooden blocks for our baby...Does anyone know what kind of paint or wood is safe for blocks that will be spending a lot of time in DD's mouth? Thanks in advance!!

I've never attempted such a project, but what a cool idea :)

They only suggestion that I can think of would be to NOT use MDF or any sort of pressed wood product. I know that those contain chemicals that are not baby safe. Maybe you have local wood yard that could help you sort out the different wood types? I don't know if they all are treated with chemicals? I doubt it. As for paint I have no clue?
