    Default Strange toddler nursing question...

OK, I'm embarrassed to even admit this, but here goes. For the past couple of weeks whenever Carrie is nursing before nap and bedtime I've let her hold her dolly. Dolly has recently become her lovey, and apparently Carrie has decided that when she nurses, dolly needs milk too.

Is this normal? Should I be doing anything to discourage this? At the moment I do find it funny, to have a rag doll shoved against my chest, but I have a feeling anyone witnessing this would think I'm totally nuts. After a few seconds I tell Carrie that dolly is all done with milk and that it's Carrie's turn now, but she's starting to use it as a delay tactic too. We nurse, then I read her stories, and then instead of letting me put her in her crib she signs "milk", and when the flaps come down it's really dolly who wanted the milk. Sigh.

So please can someone tell me that other toddlers do this too?!?

    Sarah :)

I think it sounds very normal, very sweet, and non-embarrassing.

Totally normal! I was thrilled when Kaya did it for the first time and am perfectly happy to nurse her dolls and loveys when she's finished. Sometimes she'll do it at the end and sometimes she'll do it in between. I think it's very sweet and just a sign that she thinks her dolly needs her milk as well. :)

That's very cute! I wouldn't worry about it - it sounds like she is a wonderful dolly mommy and doesn't want her little dolly to miss out on the good stuff!

It sounds precious. If she's using it to delay naps, you might consider offering to "nurse" dolly before putting her in the crib. FWIW, I've "nursed" a range of animals and dollies, including Elmo and Buzz Lightyear. ;)

Wait until *she* starts nursing her dollies. It will melt your heart!

Buzz Lightyear, huh? Well, I don't feel quite so awkward about the doll now! ;)

I guess I'll just take it for what it is and not worry about what other people might think if they knew. DH got a good chuckle out of it when I told him, and thought I should "ask the internet" whether it was normal. Thanks for all the reassurances!

    Hi Sarah,

Not at all embarassing & totally normal. :)

My DD has often held up her pink bunny lovey to my chest so that he can nurse, too.

For the past several months, she is the one that nurses her bunny & other animals/dolls. She makes little beds for them w/blankets, reads them books, nurses them, rocks them, pats their backs & tucks them in. Then she gives them a kiss & starts all over again. It is soooo cute for me to see. :)

No worries. Hope Dolly enjoys nursing. :)

I "nursed" a Thomas the Tank Engine Train (Henry, specifically) during our extended nursing days. It's perfectly normal, and very sweet.
