Default Avoiding shortening - can I sub butter in cookie recipe?

I have always avoided any recipe calling for shortening. This week I have received *two* cookie recipes from friends and they both have shortening as a prominent ingredient.

I realize butter is not great for my arteries, either, but if I opt to avoid the cup of Crisco, what will happen if I use butter in its place? Do you have any other tips?

    Thank you!

My mom subs Coconut Oil.....it sometimes changes the flavor *a little* but it is SO much better for you and it tastes good, just maybe a little different.

Butter makes a crisper cookie. Shortening makes a softer cookie.

I substitute butter all the time. You could buy shortening w/o trans fats. You can find them at natural food stores and possibly conventional stores. We buy it for pie crusts.

I thought coconut oil was one of the tropical oils that were only a tad better than trans fats?
