Default 1st doses of swine flu vaccine will be in nasal mist

I just saw on the news that the first doses of the vaccine will be the live nasal spray. Therefore pregnant women have been taken off the list.

So, let me get this straight - they're rushing to get the vax ready like crazy and they choose to start with the delivery system that leaves out the most vulnerable people?
    Ugh.

I was puzzled when I heard there will be a nasal mist. I thought the mist used a live virus, so you had to consider yourself somewhat contagious for a certain period of time because some people can shed the virus and infect others. If that's true, why would they do that with a highly contagious version of the flu?

That is insane to use a live virus in a pandemic situation. Why would you want people shedding H1N1 for days/weeks??? That makes no sense to me.

Wait a minute. DS has asthma. I thought asthmatics aren't eligible for nasal mists. WTF?

Yep. I am pregnant and DS1 has asthma - so we won't get the first round. While around us those who can will be getting it (understandably) and shedding live virus.

Yup, that's what it said in the article. The nasal mist is not for pregnant women, children under 2, and those with asthma or other chronic respiratory diseases. Its approved for age 2 to 49.

Why is that? Because it uses a live virus?
