Default Girl's first summer - dresses or onesies?

Our baby girl will be about 6 months old when next summer rolls around and I'm scoping the summer sales now to find bargains. For a baby girl's first summer, do you think I'll mostly want to put her in cotton onesies and shorts, or is it just as convenient for me and comfortable for her to put her in comfy cotton dresses with just a diaper underneath? I found some really cute and soft cotton a-line dresses at the Gap and Old Navy 30% off sale this weekend and I'm wondering how many of them I should get for her, if any at all.

A friend of mine said she liked putting her daughter in onesies that have an attached skirt, but I haven't seen any of those during my summer sale shopping. If anyone liked using those for your baby girl, do you have a good source for where to find them?

Thank you in advance for any advice you might have!

Carters sells really cute onesies with attached skirts (or maybe they're dresses with built in diaper covers!). They're probably on huge markdown now. Our older DD was 4-6 months her first summer and we did just onesies at home most of the time. For going outside, we liked lightweight rompers the best - they're loose and cool and provide more sun coverage than onesies. It's fun to have a couple of cute dresses in the mix, because they look so adorable in them, but they're not super practical for babies exploring mobility. At 6 months they're on the cusp of crawling and scooting, and IME dresses and crawling don't go so well together.

I would wait and see what size your DD is: there are always sales on baby clothes. My DD was tiny and would not have fitted into 6 month clothes at all - she was probably still in 0-3 month clothes for her first summer when she was 6 months old. If I had pre-bought she would never have worn any of it. If you see something you really love at a great price (under $3?) get it but be aware that she might never wear it.

Sorry if that's not what you wanted to hear - shopping for baby clothes is fun!

I'd go with onsies at that age, I tried dresses and they really weren't good for crawling. Also no one can really see them if the baby isn't standing/walking and just always being held.

Now she wears them all the time though.

No, it's not what I wanted to hear but it's good to hear it so I don't go overboard. It's just so tempting to stock up and feel really prepared, but I know I should go easy on the shopping so I don't end up with a bunch of unworn clothes. I overbought at the Gap/Old Navy sale (I was shopping with my son, so I just had to do the "grab-and-go" thing) and now I'm sorting through my purchases and deciding what to return and what to keep.

My son's Old Navy and Kohl's Jumping Beans cotton clothes really seem to shrink for him (he's tall and often needs a size up in onesies and all-cotton clothes so he gets enough height in the torso), so I was kind-of thinking the same might happen for our little girl, too, if she gets the tall gene from my husband. It's all a gamble, I guess. It is fun, but the decision-making is also stressing me out a bit!

After having a boy I couldn't wait to buy dresses. Bought way too many of them. Wish I had more onsies and one piece rompers that are better for rolling and crawling.

Rompers for sure were most practical for us in the 1st summer. But those can be tough if the size isn't right. Of course at that age you'll need a wardrobe in 2 sizes for each season practically so you could stock up on basics that can span seasons and dresses that can be worn as tunics with diaper cover and or bike shorts/leggings. I found for the first year I had to buy the basics and got the rest as gifts since everyone likes to give cute dresses.

I kind of agree. My girls were always running small, so I never did well when I bought ahead for the first two years. I guess it depends on where you live, but with air conditioning in the summer, I rarely reached for the bubble outfits at 6 mo. We did dresses with little bike shorts or bloomers (hanna andersson) and capris with cute tops. I always thought babies at six months looked uncomfortable in shorts. Lots of cute cardigan sweaters for when we were inside with air conditioning. My girls would still get cold quickly.

DD2 had a fair mix of rompers, light weight pant sets and dresses for her first summer. I really liked Baby Lulu skirted onesies and pant sets (recently 70% off at www.forgetmenotkids and deeply discounted on www.hautelook.com and http://www.zulily.com/). Due to the fact that we do not have significant changes in season, I am able to buy ahead. I agree that with dresses, you have more leeway with sizing (worn a little longer when bigger, shorter with leggings as DD grows).

carters onsie dresses all the way. So freaking comfy and adorable! DD lived in them. They are really soft too. Costco had a good selection too
