Default If you breastfed your baby, for how many months did you breastfeed?

I'm just curious about breastfeeding and wondering what people's experiences have been with breastfeeding and even extended breastfeeding. I'd really appreciate anything anyone would feel comfortable sharing about their reasons and the logistics associated with extended breastfeeding.

I just weaned my son who is almost 12 months. I loved nursing, had no major problems or struggles with it and would have nursed longer if I hadn't gotten pregnant so soon. My main reason for weaning was that it got to be too much and too uncomfortable for me once I got further in the pregnancy.

I breastfed both daughters about 2 1/2 years.

I didn't get self-weaning models and I was too lazy to be bothered weaning any time sooner. I kind of viewed it as a secret mommy weapon. But I live in a place where extended breastfeeding is fairly common.

DS1 self-weaned 2 weeks after he turned two.

DS2 is 19 months and still nursing many, many times a day. I plan to let him self-wean as well.

Neither DC has ever had formula.

As a doula, pretty much all of my clients nurse past one year and most past two years as well.

In my close group of friends, all of us nursed past one year (except for my one friend that weaned her DD1 at 8 months, but nursed her DD2 till 15 months).

So I'd say that extended nursing is pretty common in the circles I'm in! It wasn't till I joined my local MOMS Club that I saw a bunch of babies that were formula fed, some exclusively from birth.

DS mostly self weaned himself at 11 months, but even that long was a miracle. We had a super rocky start to breast feeding and a 1 month interruption when he was 7 months old that made him have to relearn how to nurse, or even eat anything. That was a very diffucult time for us in so many ways, but being able to get back on track with nursing after an unexpected, uncontrollable interruption was a relief. I was a bit sad when he stopped nursing, but I also had started working and it was getting tough to pump in the port-a-potty type restrooms at the refinery I had started working at, so it was bittersweet- though I would have liked to nurse much longer.

Dd: self weaned at 15 months

ds: induced lactation, low milk supply led to weaning at around 9 months

baby: no signs of stopping anytime soon. I plan on letting him self wean & I am NOT in an area where people breastfeed much. I am a rarity here.
