    Default Mattress buying?

We want to get DD a new twin bed.
I want it to be firm/extra firm - what determines this? coilsprings? Is 312 enough?

What other specifications do I look for for a firm mettress?

We just bought DD a new mattress and I went with the middle of the road with regard to softness. It wasn't the firmest that they had and it wasn't a plush pillowtop. So far, so good -- she sleeps like a champ in her "big girl bed!" What was also important for me (besides comfort) was getting a mattress that didn't have added chemicals as an allergen barrier. The place we bought her mattress from sold mattresses with "bioguard" on them. I know the mattress already has a ton of flame-retardants on it, so I thought if there was a way to avoid one more chemical, I would. So we bought the model that didn't have the extra chemicals. HTH!

Have you thought about foam instead? I am a foam mattress convert- memory or regular- ever since I met dh. Even with rotation my coil mattresses growing up always wore unevenly and bothered me. I like foam! I think IKEA is supposed to have a good, safe, foam mattress fwiw.

I dont like coils too, but I didnt like the ikea foam ones either. They bunch up and I think we have their firm and it kind of sinks...when we sleep...not much support.

I just bought 2 of them. Bunk beds and all.

Went into sleepys. The guy showed us one crappy overpriced mattress after another. Waved a hand toward the corner and said, don't even look at that one, it's memory foam and $499. I asked him the brand. He said Serta Memory Foam.

I said, "you know, last year when I was looking for a twin mattress, I got a serta memory foam one on overstock.com for $199".

Sleepys salesman: "I'll tell you to go ahead and buy these there then because there is NO WAY I could match that price!!!"

Me (whipping out the iPhone): "OK, I'll do it right now!"

Salesguy: "WAIT! Let me check with the manager!"

gets on the phone and punches 3 buttons, tells whoever is on the phone what I just told him. The person tells him to match the price. He gets off the phone and starts working on the computer to match the price I named.

I clear my throat and say, "Ummm... that's including taxes, since overstock doesn't charge taxes and had a $2 delivery fee."

He chokes a little and then changes the price of each mattress to be $175 so that it's $200 including taxes.

We loaded them in the car and drove home.

My husband is convinced that I have super-negotiating powers and that Sleepys is sleazier than used car salesmen.

DS has a firm 6" latex matress from foambymail. I love his so much, that DH and I are going to switch out our matress as well!

Personally, I don't like the memory foam; I don't feel like it gives me enough support, but the latex feels great.

I won't debate that you have super negotiating powers, and Sleepys IS sleazy as can be. I had heard bad things, and then we went in there looking for a mattress for DD, and couldn't stand the place, the salesman, the whole 9 yards. We ended up getting a great mattress for a pretty good price from a local, independent furniture place. We will never go back to Sleepys again.

You are the queen of negotiation! Remind me of my grandma, she always started negotiating at less than half price...........
