Question Question for Kindle and Nook Owners

Do you share your e-reader with anyone or does each person get their own? I'm really tempted to take the plunge and was wondering how this worked out.

If you do share, is there a way to restrict access to certain books so that not everyone can read it? Just curious because some books that I read may not be appropriate for younger readers. If I'm reading a crime or suspense book, I wouldn't necessarily want my elementary school daughter to read that because it's not age appropriate. IYKWIM. Maybe it's better for me not to share with her.

    Thanks!

My husband and I both have our own kindles but we share an account so we have access to each others books. From what I understand, on the Kindle at least there is no way to limit access to the archive of books or prevent one-touch purchases. There is supposed to be a way to set up the device so that you use gift cards but then that device won't have access to your archive. I really wish there was a password option for purchases and I could see it coming in handy for getting books out of the archive as well. I'm getting ready to get the new Kindle and I'd love to hand my old one down to my oldest but we aren't comfortable with her being able to buy books willy-nilly.

The regular Nook is now $119 in anticipation of the new version too!

Ooooohhhh I think that I am leaning toward the New Nook. I like the touchscreen. How do you borrow books from the library with the Nook?

I looked at the Kindle at Target and it looked nice, but kinda intimidated me. I guess that I will have to check them both out at Best Buy to decide for sure.

I have a Nook Color and I don't share well, so it's all mine. Dh doesn't read as much as I do, so he doesn't have an e-reader.

I'm actually considering getting one of the new Nooks as well to have an e-ink reader I can read easily outdoors.

ETA: I forgot to answer your library question. I have a membership at an online library that uses Overdrive. You have to install Adobe Digital Editions on your home computer and download the books to your computer first and then use your USB cable to connect your Nook to the computer to transfer your library book. It's referred to as sideloading on the Nook Forums.

Thanks for the quick tutorial. I bought my nook color a few days ago and all I've done is web browse . I kind of hate that there isn't a hard copy of the instructions, so I haven't read all of the user guide yet.

It may vary from library to library, but for me I need Adobe Digital Editions set up on my computer. You have to register it with Adobe, too. I check out a library ebook from my library and download it. It downloads a placeholder file, when you open it it'll download the actual book into ADE. That's what does the rights management. When my nook is plugged into my computer with my USB cable, it shows up in ADE and I just drag and drop.

It's not perfect, ADE is sometimes a little cranky. But it's well worth the effort. I've more than paid for my nook just by checking out library books rather than buying them.

ETA: If library books are a factor, check with your library to make sure they have a decent selection of books you want to read. I often have to put a hold on a book I want and wait a bit, but it hasn't really been an issue yet.

I looked at my public library and I didn't see anything about ebooks online. I'll have to call them, but if worse comes to worse, I can always join the Philiadelphia library.

I haven't checked out a library book in years, but use to when I was in high school. It sure would be convenient to do it online.

I just got a Nook Color the other day so I'm still learning about it. I can't help with the technical question, but I DO share my Nook with my DS. He likes a few of the apps (Float, especially) and I have downloaded a few books for him already. He's a pretty good kid and knows that he's only supposed to read his own books or play apps. DH has an iPad and the only time he shares is when he's out of school (which seems like never). DS has quite a few apps on there that DS plays, when given the chance.
