We just got power back! YAY! We had the damage from the wind. Thankfully no hole in the roof just lots of shingles gone. It was really bad around our house. There are dozens of 75+ year old giant trees that were taken down in our little town. Many people have trees on their homes so we consider ourselves lucky to only have fence issues. Hope those further north fared well.

Mommylamb, It looks like Highway 12 is shut down on the north end of the outer banks. It is also completely gone on the Southern end with a total breach. I think that Dare County is not even allowing residents back until at least tomorrow. WRAL is a tv station out of Raleigh that has some decent footage and coverage if you want to check it out. wral.com. I hope that you can get in your vacation but unfortunately I wouldn't count on it tomorrow.

kdeunc, I started that thread about any good you got from Irene before I saw this and the damage you suffered in your yard/neighborhood. I'm sorry if it seemed insensitive...I had somehow missed all of this.

Not a problem! We were inconvenienced but will be just fine. It could have been much worse! I am glad it was not as bad as it could have been for everyone. I was able to get the whole house cleaned up, even in the dark!

If you knew how uninspired I am to ever clean the house you would be impressed!

According to Dare County emergency management bulletin, general public and visitors will be able to get through Duck as of 10 am on Tuesday. http://www.co.dare.nc.us/EmgyMgmt/Alert/index.asp It's not ideal but at least it's some semblance of a vacation assuming we can really get in by then. We'll be leaving the house by 4:30 am.

Thanks! I hope your neighborhood recovers quickly. Hurricane damage is a royal pain. When Hurricane Gloria came through the Northeast when I was a kid, we lost over 20 trees from our front yard (but none hit the house amazingly). It was still a ton of work to just clean up.

We are now looking into figuring out how to get these trees taken care of! :/

    Mommylamb,
If you have a chance, could you update about the OBX. We are supposed to go up north of Corolla on the 4x4 beach in 2 weeks and I have a sinking feeling we are going to have to make alternate plans....
