I think that any time you are moving a seat in and out, and dealing with someone who will not be using the seat very often, you need to KISS as much as possible. A booster is going to be much easier for the sitter to use correctly and you can teach your DS how to use it as well.
This is what I was leaning towards, although I have not actually used a booster yet with DD. If she was bigger (she is not yet 40 pounds), I think I would be ok with trying the above scenario.
    DD - 6
    DS - 4

Booster train with you for a few weeks and if he's doing fine, then booster for sitter (maybe the turbo booster for the sitter). DS booster trained around that age and he picked it up very quickly. He really wanted to be in a booster like his friends and knew I would harness him if he couldn't sit properly. I even kept the harnessed seat in the car, but I never needed to pull over and put him in it.

So I got the Monterey yesterday. Looks great. Very beefy. Have not used it yet though. I was reading the manual and it states that Diono recommends that children that still fit in a harnessed seat stay in a harnessed seat - which makes me nervous as DS clearly still fits in his harnessed seats. Should I just return the Monterey and get another Frontier for DH's car? I could then give the Maestro to the sitter.

I have to laugh at myself because my preggo brain got all confused and wondered how your DH can drive a mountain buggy to work?

Tough call. He could still theoretically ride in a frontier for a very long time. Aren't those supposed to accomodate up to 57" or something? With limits like that I am not sure if there is any reason to ever have a child in a booster seat.

I was thinking the same thing. Too much time in stroller land.

They aren't talking about mature, well supervised 5 year olds, they are trying to keep 2 year olds out of boosters.

My CPS trained CHiP officer friend told me the same thing once. He said that the car seat companies have to put blanket statements like that so parents aren't tempted to put 2 yr olds, even large ones in boosters full time and that they often put such high weight and height limits on the seats often to acomodate special needs children, not well behaved 5 to 7 yr. olds who are ready for a booster.

Good luck with the booster training.

Awwwww, thanks for making me feel better about this guys. I also discusssed it with DH and he thinks it's a good idea to start doing booster training in his car as DS basically only rides in it 7 minutes to daycare in the morning.

Guess we will start practicing this weekend with the booster and take it from there.

Thanks for reining in my insanity.
