    Default mattress for platform bed

If you have a platform bed do you use a regular mattress without the box springs? Or do you have a special mattress made for platform beds?

For five years we have used our regular, pillow-top, mattress on the platform without box springs. It's been fine, until lately. My shoulders ache in the morning. The mattress is about 12 years old and now we need a new one.

We can go to a mattress liquidator and get something for $300-500. Or there is a specialty mattress store in town that specializes in platform bed mattresses. Those start at $1,000.

We have ikea mattresses on our beds, all of which are platform beds.

Regular mattress on a platform bed... I am not aware of a "specialty" mattresses for that purpose. We have a tempurepedic on a platform bed and no more back pain.

Catherine -- do you know if you have foam, latex or coil mattresses?

Marit-- from my research the platform mattresses tend to be memory foam or tempurpedic.

I'm weary of memory foam because I hear it runs hot. I have to be cold when I sleep.

I also read that Ikea's latex mattresses lose their umph after a couple of years.
