Default Looking for books about Dyslexia or Processing Disorders

Hi there. I am out of my element and hope some moms here can give me information or sources to information.

My DD is beginning 2nd grade is struggling. She hates to read and write and has great difficulty. She still has many number and letter reversals, resists writing sentences longer than 5 words, reads words out of order, sounds out words with sounds out of order, and has difficulty tracking lines of text. She comes from a family of readers.

We had concerns when she was in K and 1st grade and met with teachers and a reading specialist and they don't see a problem.

We are seeing a pediatric ophthalmologist at the end of this month to rule out vision problems.

We met with a psychologist who had DD take the Wechsler Individual Achievement Test -III and she told us that DD has a significant processing disorder. The psychologist is now in the process of giving her an IQ test with the expectation of being able to demonstrate a large discrepancy between achievement and IQ. The psychologist thinks that DD has been able to compensate in school to mask the processing disorder but things are very hard for her and will become even more difficult as school becomes reading intensive.

I don't understand what a processing disorder is and don't know how to help. Is this something that can be corrected? How do I work with a school to help DD get the help she needs?

I am concerned that since my daughter is in her school's gifted program and has for the past 2 years been performing at or a little better than grade level she will not qualify for special assistance.

If we can't get help from the public school system because she is performing at grade level, is it reasonable to think that a commercial tutoring site can help with this type of issue. So far, the only options that have been suggested are attending a special private school that has individual instruction and teaches the "Wilson method" for about 3 years at $30K a year (out of our budget) or hiring a tutor who teaches the "Barton method" and the only one we have found so far is 40 miles away.

I need to know more so I can understand the problem and try to figure out what kind of help we need and what options are available.

    Thanks for your help!

My daughter was diagnosed with dyslexia and dysgraphia this summer and we're using the Barton method now with a private tutor. It has worked very well for her. She was with another Orton-Gillingham tutor for 5 months and has made more progress in one month with Barton than in 5 months of just straight OG. Barton actually can be taught at home as well. Susan Barton's website has a huge amount of information on it regarding dyslexia. There are some videos on it that are worth watching. Our dyslexia testing specialist had us watch them prior to committing to the testing, just to see if that sounded like our daughter. It was very helpful, and proved to us that we were on the right path.

We also went down the eye route and it was a dead end for us.

We are also getting ready to have her tested for AD/HD, as AD/HD and dyslexia often go hand in hand.
